I'm a <former> fan of the HOKA brand. I purchased my first HOKA shoe in March 2015. It so happens it was a pair of Cliftons. I would go on to buy about 15 pairs of various HOKA shoes from 2015 to 2023. Bondi, Clifton, Gaviota, Mafate, ect. I even had a pair of the Mach X. My most recent purchase was the Mach 5 which I got last summer. The outsoles the HOKA shoes I have worn are simply not durable. As you noticed some HOKA models have a lot of exposed midsole foam on the bottom of the shoe. But the outsole is not my main concern with HOKA. It's the midsole. Many HOKA models, even expensive ones, still use EVA foam. This foam does not last very long when used for running. Maybe a 100 miles and it's shot. For casual use, maybe work too, EVA is fine.

Whenever I buy an EVA shoe with the intention of using it for running it ends up being a waste of money. The midsole never makes it to 100 kilometers, much less miles. Doesn't matter what brand the shoe is. EVA just sucks for running.

I wanted to buy Clifton's and saw the sole the other day... The shoe looks like.it won't last beyond a few miles. The rubber is literally only at certain places and foam covers most of the sole. Are these shoes durable?

I bought these from REI the last time they were on sale a couple of weeks ago. They are made to be lighter than most running shoes —and hence their appearance— however I read numerous reviews on running sites and there were no comments to the effect that they were not durable or were not suitable for running. Some reviews said they might not have enough cushioning if you do a lot of miles every week but they did not say the shoes would fall apart if you ran up the miles. I bought these to be ready for spring running so I haven't run in them yet but they seem comfortable and light.

what do you use instead? I love the comfort but I rotate them so they don't get too abused

Not sure what type of roadways some of the posters here are running on but I find it quite funny that people are saying that after 100 miles the shoes are basically worthless. I have had multiple pairs of Rincons and have run on them from everything from 5 mile daily runs, to half-marathons, and even 20 mile long runs (when I'm training for a marathon). Never have these shoes lost any of their bounce and benefits until at least 250 miles and even then they are still fine for regular training runs. Yes, you will see notable wear on the bottom of the shoes but they are still totally fine to run in.

The first version of the Rincon that came out 5 years ago did have some durability issues, but that was rectified by the second model. This 3rd edition is even better. Do yourself a favor and just google reviews. I would have no hesitations buying this shoe as a daily trainer at this price.

What on earth are you talking about? It's ridiculous to lump all shoes of a category of foam together. Some EVA shoes last a long time, some don't. Some pebax shoes last a long time, some don't. It comes down to the specific formulas and the application - a Nike Invincible is going to last a hell of a lot longer than a Vaporfly, even though they use the same foam. Your claim that all EVA shoes are less durable is just bizarre - I've never heard anybody argue that. If anything, they tend to be more durable (though at the cost of weight and performance).

Millions of runners have been using EVA foams for decades, it's only recently that these newer (and more expensive) alternatives have come about. They've all been able to run in EVA-based shoes just fine, so I don't know what your issue is - sounds like a you problem. They're perfectly fine for daily trainers, as they have been for years. Use the cheap EVA shoes for your daily easy miles, save the expensive superfoam shoes for racing and hard workouts.

That all said, I do agree that Hoka tends to fall on the less durable end. Their foam formulation is softer than most as they prioritize comfort. It's not for everyone, but plenty really like it.

I never owned a pair of Hoka but that is just crazy that a pair of running shoes with a price tag of >100 bucks could not last 100 miles

I totally agree with your comments on Hokas. I've been using them since 2013 for running but have eventually discovered that I need a support shoe which is the Arahi. I found the neutral shoe like the Cliftons to wear unevenly towards the inside for me and I'm a mid-foot striker. I still got 300 running miles but figured out that my gait was crashing more to the inside. With the Arahi, it has more support for this thus evened out my wear. As for mileage on the Arahi, I consistently get 350 miles before I start to get ankle/knee soreness which is my indicator. I have tried the Saucony Omni which is in the same category and worked well with same mileage but my soreness indicator came on suddenly not gradually like the Hokas. Hokas are worth it but you gotta find the right one for you.
