They've already said in several YouTube videos the only real update will be USB-C and maybe a new charging system…not much else
The more important things they need to fix are the quality control issues. That's the only thing that's kept me from getting these. Considering I still use a lot of lightning products, I'm still a few years away from being fully usb-c so I'm always tempted to get these, especially considering my Apple ecosystem.
While still a 'deal' compared to the inflated MSRP, I personally wouldn't spend that much on a pair of 3 year old headphones that are slated to be upgraded this year.
While I too have seen reports (unsubstantiated from 3rd parties) that this year's upgrade will likely be minimal, I'm hoping Apple does a bit more than just the bare minimum. USB-C is a no brainer, as is upgrading the chip set. But these headphones are already overpriced for what they do, so if they want to get people to upgrade, they'll need to make it worthwhile. And if they don't add new features and functionality, which other similar or cheaper priced ones have now, it's just going to cause most other people to pass on them. Even last year's Air Pods Pro are more capable then these are for less than half the price. And the next version better have a case that doesn't make it look like a purse.

Apple wants to get rid of stock - that's Cook's specialty
They will update 2% of the Max while using 98% of the same parts they are using now to make sure there is no waste.
Once they have used the majority of the supply chain up they will release the "updated" version as a lower cost one and then reveal the NEW and IMPROVED Max PRO!!!!!!!*******
Both Airpods got minimal upgrades and its been years since they updated the Max - they know they can make these cheap so why rock the boat?
