Ok just so everyone's clear, 7800x3d for gaming(all cores can access 3d V--cache), 7950x3d for productivity. This is for...productivity, but you are limited by budget.

I think they meant fps per buck you'd be better off with a 7800x3d.

That's correct, AMD desktop CPUs have worse idle power consumption, because AMD uses multiple chiplets (including the I/O die) in their desktop CPUs. Idle power ends up being 2X-3X worse than Intel for desktop.

You'll have to plug in your own use case and do the math to figure out which one ends up using less power for you. Because for example if you leave your PC running/browse the internet for 12 hours a day, play 2 hours of gaming daily, encoding a video for like 5 minute, Intel ends up using less power. On the other hand if youre encoding videos for hours at a time, or any other 100% workload for long periods, then AMD is more efficient.

Personally I'd avoid the 7900x3D either way, as both the 7900x3D and 7950x3D have scheduling issues for gaming, since games dont know whether to use the v-cache die or the regular die with a higher clock. The 7800x3D avoids that issue since it only has one die, but it also has very poor multithread performance because of that. The 7900x3D also ends up being slower in nearly every metric (single thread, multi-thread, gaming) than the cheaper 14700k.

AMD has been the more efficient and cooler CPU for half a decade now. Where have you been?

They should have never made this. They also should have made both the 7950s ccds x3d.

Of course go wit the 7800X3D if you don't need heavy video editing/content creation resources, but even so, Ryzen Master a free AMD utility will allow you to put the higher sku's into a game mode to try and improve the cores leveraging the CCX infinity cache. Just drop down to 8 for gaming scenarios.

They had an engineering sample on the 5000 series that was never released because the benefits for gaming didn't seem drastic. That may change for Zen 5, we shall see.

I'm pretty sure the cache core issue has been resolved (on windows) via chipset drivers for 7950x3d users

I'm waiting for this too. It's just around the corner in April - June. This means reviews and more price drops.

Pretending money isn't a factor, is 7800X3D still better for gaming than 7950X3D?

On the 7950x3d you would have to disable the non 3d cache ccd to avoid any potentially bad scheduling issues. This can be annoying if you do encounter it. 7950x3d will have higher clock speed than the 7800x3d, I think by 200mhz with factory pbo over locking.

correct, if you are only gaming get 7800x3d, same performance and cheaper.

You wont be able to tell the difference in games with a 7900x3d vs 7800x3d without running benchmarks.

Nobody truly knows. Any leak you see is iffy at best especially reports of 40% greater IPC. I would expect a 10-15% increase based on past chips.

Which is why to get to 50+ ipc an upgrade path must be about 4-8y out passing over 3 gens of cpu/gpu. Still waiting on those 8k screens and monitors to be mainstreamed. Alot of high end tech is not affordable. Hopefully AMD doesnt make the mis step of overpricing cpu like they do gpu. AM5 mobo makers got crazy pricing of mid and high tier boards.. 100% price increases over 2018 high end am4

Would this make an excellent homelab server? Or I'd rather go with intel for quicksync
