Works well for a backup phone. Works best in the mornings. Less internet traffic.
Use weekly to keep your current #.. Uses T-Mobile service.

What kind of ad and how do they send it to you?
Just ad on its own TextNow app, which you will have to use it, the app, for calls and messages. I can close the ad window easily, so the ad doesn't really bother me(at least not worth $5/month to remove the ad).

If I'm on the overseas trip for a while, 1 month, for example, how can I keep the number active?
Yes, and easy. You can simply use the TextNow app on your phone to make a call or send a message to keep your number active. In this case, you will have to use WIFI, but I believe you can access WIFI while you are out of the country.

I used this in my daughter's phone for almost a year. It was nice for her to let us know when she got off the bus or if she needed anything while we were at work. I set her age as under 18 and the adult ads went away. Only other issue was to remember to call/text once a month to keep the number.
same here, using it for the kid, no screen time without data plan Smilie

Bought a txtnow sim card several years ago. Number cancelled due to inactivity. Bought today again using the same email address. No confirmation email (I guess no shipping then), because Txtnow system may think I am an existing customer (just wanting to reinstate their service)... Unfortunately, I didn't keep the original simcard from them... Wasted $1.

Do they tell you that the number is going to be lost. Or does it just randomly show up as no number attached?
Yes, they send you an email to remind you.
Please refer to the email below I just copied from my mail box:

==============================

Your number is about to expire.

Un-used numbers are recycled to help keep TextNow free for everyone. Send a text or make a call to keep your number.

Ok cool so it's just like Google voice then. Give you a warning before you lose it. Thanks. I'll order one.

There was no confirmation email right after the order(I got an email from Paypal for $0.99 though). And about 8 hours later they sent me an email saying "Your new SIM card is on its way!".
This time I did use the same email address as that used for my last order couple years ago.
So, you should be good, you didn't waste $1.

Also, keep in mind that even you lose the number due to inactivity, you just need to re-apply another number(FREE), you don't lose the SIM card. That is, you can still use the same SIM card in your cellphone to connect to T-mobile to make calls and send messages, but just with the new number.

There is ad banner on the screen, but the ad doesn't interrupt calls or text messages. To be fair, it's not "A LOT".
