There's a great range of bioavailability of vitamin D in supplements which might mean that someone gets nowhere near 10000iu absorbed. Another issue is the host factor that there can be a 5 fold difference in absorption of vitamin D between two seemingly similar individuals, so 10000iu supplementation for me might result in 5 times less increase in serum level that it would for you. Also, people with more adipose tissue are going to need heavier doses than thinner people. It's way too many confounding factors to declare this is too much, so someone should just have some blood work occasionally to see how it's going. It's not uncommon to prescribe 50000iu to those that don't respond to 5000 or 10000iu supplements.
