It definitely isn't for everyone especially at this price point but for my needs it is pretty much perfect. There are pros and cons and it may not be the device for you.

To answer some questions:

- Yes you are required to own a PS5 to use this.
- No you do not need to be on the same network as the PS5.
- It does work over the internet back to your PS5 at home which I have done. (Recommend you hardwire your PS5 though)
- It serves no other function than playing your PS5 on a mobile device.
- It does not have Bluetooth.
- it has a standard headphone jack.
- If you want wireless headphones you have to purchase Sony's "Pulse Explore" headphones.
- The controller functions just as a standard PS5 controller with all the features. (Trackpad is a soft button using the touchscreen)
- It cannot connect to WiFi that requires a captive portal as there is no built-in browser to accept terms etc…

As a side note:
I own both a Backbone and this. They each have their pros and cons. The Backbone was by no means a bad setup. I loved it. I just didn't prefer the smaller screen I was using and the layout of the buttons compared to a standard PS5 controller. The Backbone using a phone did have the big advantage of being able to connect to any type of WiFi and some of the concerns people have about having to remove their case to use it didn't apply to me because I just dedicated one of my old phones sitting around to this.

One other thing is that they do make the PS Remote Play app for the iPad and you can use a Bluetooth controller with it so that could be an option for those who already own an iPad and want a bigger screen than this.

At the end of the day it's not for everyone and there are other options out there like installing Chiaki on a hacked Switch or a Steam Deck. That app can allow you to do PS5 Remote Play on your existing mobile gaming device. For the Switch you of course need one that's running custom firmware though. So that is a potential issue for some.

I was eager to get one of these but then I learned it doesn't smoothly handle multiple profiles. That's a killer for me so I'll go for a more expensive steam deck like device.
Nice for those who this works for

Grabbed one thanks OP! Now maybe I'll find a reason to turn on my PS5 and sit for 30 minutes and relax! See gaming is good for your health. 😁

I managed to snag one of these a month or so ago. It's an unnecessary splurge, but I like it. I like being able to game for half an hour or so in bed before I go to sleep. Or a little bit in the morning before I go to work. It's the only remote play I've tried, but I also have a switch and steam deck. I never use the switch, and while I like the steam deck, I find myself playing PS5 more often. iPad and controller would give a bigger screen, but I wouldn't think it would be as streamlined. More cumbersome to set up and use too. It's not a perfect device, but I think it's probably the best portable ps5 option. Comparing to switch and steam deck:

Pros: The Portal is the best device in terms of comfort and weight. Dual Sense capability is a big plus. It's well integrated into the system (no fiddling like you might need to do on steam deck).

Cons: I play over WiFi, it usually works well, but does lag sometimes. Kind of a bummer if you want to play a physical media game, but it's not the one currently in the console. I usually use wired headphones anyway, but it is lame that the portal doesn't have Bluetooth.

imo, a great informational video watch about this is digital foundry.

afaik they didn't do enough testing on actual connectivity for real world performance but I thought it was an interesting watch. Basically boils down to this being weaker for connectivity as this is more of an afterthought product vs the wii u which had the tablet be integral. Of course the wii u is garbage and the ps portal you get some great games so not a good comparison, just something I found personally interesting and really highlights the more YMMV nature of how good this device can be.

For anyone that gets this, I am unable to hardwire my PS5 but have a decent router. I needed to force most of my other devices to 2.4ghz to get it working well. So if it runs bad for you just do that first before you get too mad. I have separate 2.4 and 5ghz bands but always default to putting stuff on 5ghz. I had 22 devices on it...none of which were doing much, but it didn't seem to matter. Now it works fine for me.

Try forcing some of your other devices to 2.4ghz...that helped me a ton. I don't notice the things on 2.4ghz either so it was a decent solution for me.
