Benefit is not having to go through TSA, the sightseeing, and being able to take a ton of luggage. It's also way more comfortable. Sleeping is always an issue when traveling, but the gentle rocking of the train actually helps somewhat.
i can't speak to the others but the northeast ones (e.g. ny-boston, philly-dc, etc), are absolutely worth it at those prices imo. the train is comfortable, beats driving (including the traffic trying to get to the airport), and when you factor in the time getting through security etc is really not that much longer.
would i want to do some of those longer trips by train (e.g. Dallas-LA)? maybe not unless i were looking for a more scenic/comfortable ride but it's still a good deal if you're into it

Most of these routes have better flights and less travel time. Only benefit I see is bringing a large amount of luggage or using the auto-train for your vehicle.

So the government will just increase the subsidies by 25% and the rest of us who don't use this bloated dinosaur will pay for the 12 people who still use it.

I agree. I'd take a train over a flight anytime if I could and was not in a rush!

I agree with the sightseeing and luggage, but confused by the TSA portion of your comment?

Agreed, Dallas to LA in this timeframe can be had for $115ish and you'd spend a single day in travel vs 44 freaking hours.
I feel like the "comfort" folks are being a bit dishonest here, I'd rather sit on a tight plane for 4 hours then do literally whatever I wanted than be stuck in a train seat for literally 11x longer
I feel like Amtrak only ever makes sense if you're in the northeast on shorter routes.

if you're using public transport, you're using the roads, therefore you should pay for the gas as part of your public transport ticket as the gas tax helps fund the roads.
biggest offenders are people who cycle and don't pay the gas tax, yet they feel like they're entitled to an entire lane on the road.

I've admired Amtrak routes, and have often thought about booking a trip on the California Zephyr. The idea isn't about how fast you can get to your destination, but a big part of enjoying your vacation IS the journey. Getting a roomette, enjoying your meals, being able to walk around (at stops or on the train), chilling in the observation car, or just reading a book and watching the great scenery our country has to offer. The lack of TSA patting me down is nice too. A plane is nice if you need to go to and from in a timely matter.

Because bikes wear out that lane like 1/100th the rate that a car will?
