Back in the day, much different. 99cent big macs at the drive in, two of us in the car and we order 8. Drive in speaker asks "HOW MANY?" Quarter pounders w cheese were 1.00 ea instead of .99 when the deal was for them. When 20 pc mcnuggets were on sale for 2.99, even 3.99 later, oh yeah bring on the hot mustard and sweet and sour. The breakfast deal I liked was 69 cent sausage biscuits. Maybe 59 cents. No egg or cheese. Stuffing that crap down at 6 am before weight room for football. Yeah we got in good shape!
Back then at regular price the stuff was still cheap compared to real food prices. These prices today, it costs more than real food. I can't understand why anyone would go there. I guess they are feeling it, if they have to do free stuff ala harbor freight to get people to come in.
Really though McDonald's operates on the economy of scale. AKA they buy in massive bulk and can negotiate favorable pricing.
Do I know the exact breakdown? No. But as an example, I have a good friend that owns a Dunkin Donuts. A cup of coffee costs them pennies but sell it significantly above that. So even if they give it away for "Free" it is usually a loss leader to get you into and buy something else. Or the few pennies they eat per free cup they make up with a few full priced sales.
Really just some realistic look at this in that nothing is "free". There is a cost associated with something. McDonald's spends a ton of money developing the App, promotions, and marketing. No one is gaming the system.

At $20 /hr min wage, they can buy their own.
its more than 1 dollar about what most of them are worth.
if i wanna pay regular prices I'm going to in n out or chick fil a instead of these trash corporate restaurants that are actually real estate companies selling their brand to increase real estate value and rent them out.
about 70-80% of the corporate restaurants are this now and their quality decreasing after going corporate and higher prices because of rent not wages.
hopefully these corporations all go bankrupt as they destroy themselves.
