I've been using it for 3 years as a college student in nursing. Works great with many applications/tabs open and I even run premiere pro on it. 8gb is enough for the average person.

Anyway during covid i picked up intense biking and also had a gopro8. I tried to make movies on iMovie and it would crash and overheat all the time so i gave up. I dont think the m1 can handle much.
It certainly can. It depends on what codec you use and what program you use. Ideally you want footage / codec that takes advantage of the dedicated encoding chips on the m1 so the gpu isn't doing the work, and a program that supports said codec
The MacBook Air M1 is probably the best bang for your bucks laptop out there even in 2024. Tho I wouldn't pay $600 for used/refurbished unless it's factory refurbished.
Curious, if it's the best bang for your bucks laptop in 2024, what did you trade it in for?
Absolutely no issues for light photoshop and video editing and bad browser tab hygiene.
They go for $150-160 on eBay all day every day [ebay.com]
$25 for the RAM [amazon.com]
2TB drive for $84 [newegg.com]
SSD prices have gone up a bit since I bought mine - paid $66 for a 2TB Samsung Gen 3 drive a few months back - Got the machine from Woot (they come into stock every so often) because new battery and good return policy.
Looks like the price right now is $140 (computer) + $25 (RAM) + $85 (SSD) = $250 spot on the nose
I've had this setup for about 6 months and it's fantastic. It's cheap enough to not worry about it, it's super durable as it was a business laptop, the battery life is excellent, keyboard is superlative, and the screen is legitimately nice.

Seriously, 7th gen i5 is as capable as m1?

I use it for streaming, working, tasks like that.
M1 is much faster, but it's more than twice as expensive.
I gather most people aren't rendering movies or mastering audio.
If you want a Mac, buy an M1 mini and the $250 laptop. The Minis run about $350 second hand, so you can get both of them for the same price as the MacBook...
