Most jewelers will buy it. But at about 90-95 percent of the spot price. So it needs to appreciate to break even.

I love when people say, "if the dollar goes to shit I'll have gold". That's a useless comment too, what are they planning on doing, buy some food, cut off a piece of their gold and exchange for it? My guess is the other side of the transaction will think you are crazy.

You are so wrong it's hilarious. Look at gold compared to inflation throughout time and you will see it is a bad investment. Gold as a hedge has been proven to be economically inefficient by several Nobel laureates. I am sure you have a Reddit page saying otherwise. But who am I to argue on the internet with someone obviously smarter than me…..

You are right. But $1000 in the s&p 500 would be over $4000 today. So you could buy about 2x more if you did not invest in gold. So you may not a Nobel prize winner but even easy math shows you could have been better.

Good luck selling gold for those crashed fiat dollars in that scenario..

It's a great deal from a retail purchase POV but not all that great from an investment perspective. From the Money Metals site here is gold price history over the last decade or so. You would have been better off in a stock market index fund. Buy it as a conversation piece, not an investment.

If your long term financial goal is inflation protection, just buy TIPS. Easier, safer.

The line of thinking is if the dollar goes to shit, the gold will not because of it's worldwide value.
Example using a family spending $500/mo on groceries:

Today for $2000 they can buy either an ounce of gold or groceries for 4 months. SHTF and groceries increase 8X. Now that $2000 only buys them two weeks of food, but if they have gold it should have held it's value against the dollar and now be worth $16000/oz. Still enough for 4 months of food.

I'm not endorsing that line of thinking. I'm just passing it along from previous generations who lived their entire lives thinking that scenario was just around the corner. I don't buy PM, but I click on every deal out of a weird sense of obligation.

RIP Dad and don't worry, I still have every bit of silver you and grandpa saved "just in case."

You mean 1980, after gold went from $35 to $850 in 9 years?

Yeah if you were stupid enough to buy gold in 1980, after it went up 2500%, you got waxed.
Based on historical high/low (inflation adjusted), Seems like the low is below $600 (inflation adjusted) and the high is around $2000+. So based on the logic it is stupid to buy high, whoever suggest people to buy gold "right now" and hold it, then they are just treating those people stupid and trying to get them waxed? laugh out loud
And based on historical low, probably should buy at below $1000 (inflation adjusted price)??

Please stop spreading alternative facts.

Great chart. it did hold its value if you consider last 100 years but not over the last 50 years.
I guess Gold is an asset if the civilization itself collapses and the dollar is worthless. Some ppl like to cover that sort of stuff as well. P

How about Silver? That rich dad poor dad guy touts Silver all the time.
Or any alternative asset ? TY

That narrative fails the critical thinking test at one obvious juncture: so the global powerhouse, aka USA, collapses but the countries that depend on it will keep on trucking and will have demand for gold and silver like nothing has happened?

If you must have a new 2024, then this is a bit cheaper than elsewhere, but if you don't care about the year, then it's not really a savings

Silver is poor people's gold. It roughly follows gold trends but overall bit more volatile so even poorer asset class to hold for inflation protection

I buy this for several reasons.

A. I believe fed will drop interest rates later which will cause gold to increase in value.

B. Over my lifetime I believe the fed will continue to print ungodly amounts of fiat.

C. This isn't a Gold vs Stocks/real estate investment this is a Gold vs cash investment.

D. This is better than cash sitting in your bank getting debased.

E. Costco with 2% + whatever credit card points you get (mine is 4 percent) = higher than the 4.6 percent I get apy for cash in my bank account, which will eventually go away.

Maybe, but all this trolling really seems to make these threads blow up. Tens of thousands of views and 40 thumbs up? These threads used to mostly stagnate and not really go anywhere with maybe a few thumbs up when it was just the regulars, but they seem to be really taking off with more views and higher ratings whenever the trolls jump in to get them moving. This one got moved to the front page now too. I'm starting to wonder if Zimba took my recommendation and sent messages to all the trollers to let them know there was a new gold thread to help get it trending. Rofl3
