990c has lots of speakers, and a VERY impressive surround stage, but the drivers all sound lower end, flat, a bit weak at volume, and more like stock car audio sound. App settings for bass/treble dont do much. Alternately the bose sounds crisp and full, especially dialogue and the bar itself produces a significant amount of bass for a solid center. The sub on Bose is also significantly more powerful in sound, better built, and better balanced. Also has a bass port for a 2nd sub or future expansion…..990 is what it is, not expandable.
Musically the bose sounds excellent and upmixes all content well. Not sure why but the 990 struggles to decode 2 channel music and the bass output is overall WEAK without an ATMOS LFE signal. When a movie has a musical part, the bose comes alive with punchy sound everywhere around the room where the 990 is the opposite and sounds flat and weak, lower mid bass nonexistent from the bar. The Bose signal upmixing is on par with my Denon HT, as well as the room correction. On the 990 the room correction did not make any notable changes and you select different surround modes depending on 2 channel, atmos, 5.1, ect. In theory this is OK, but none of the surround modes really provide consistent sound on all content…. so you find yourself toggling between modes when in/out of Atmos as it just doesnt great.
Bose just works perfectly out of the box. Plug in, run room correction, tweak bass/treble/sub to your particular taste and it sounds great no matter what you play on it. The upmixing just works and sounds fantastic. No need to touch the remote or app once your all set.
How do I know, bought the 990 on the EPP deal, had it a few weeks disappointed in the overall sound quality (outside the exceptional surround effects), then traded up for the Bose. Night and DAY difference. I actually went with the 900 which is the same as 700 but with added atmos drivers. If you dont need Atmos, this is the deal.
