America's Test Kitchen did the comparison between baking your own bread vs using a breadmaker. The upshot was that baking your own bread is better if you want more control. And using a bread machine is better if you want convenience. You can see the review here [youtube.com]

Bought one for my mother at Christmas in 2019. She has arthritis and can't easily knead bread by hand anymore. Still going strong after almost five years. She makes at least one loaf of bread a week, and it's basically a set-it-and-forget-it method of just throwing ingredients in and waiting for delicious bread to come out.

I highly recommend it, if you have the budget. You get what you pay for. This model is head-and-shoulders above those old bread makers with the glass dome lid from my youth. It makes delicious morning/snacking bread, and I think anyone sufficiently motivated could probably replace their sandwich bread from the store with these.
