Finally a capacity I'm actually satisfied with for an SSD at sub-$200. I wonder if this will be the limit for 5 years, like with 8TB mechanical drives?
Mechanical drives price drops plateaued because of the flooding event that happened in an area of south Asia a year or two before covid-19 that destroyed a bunch of mechanical hard drive manufacturing facilities. It dropped the global production of hard drives by something like 20%. It's just barely recovering now.

Thailand floods were 2011 though! At that time, 1TB drives were big and 2TB were huge. It still steadily rose to 8TB, with some premium ~14TB drives. But these were mostly with increasing the number of platters, not areal density.

I'm just worried that demand for increased size dropped off. For example, what percent of people use more than 2TB? 10%? What percent of people use more than 4TB? Now it's 1%. That's not a lot of market force. I want an 8TB NVME system drive for $200. But I'm worried that I won't get it until 2030.

That happened with 8tb? What year was that? Or yearS I mean
Roughly 2016-2023, 8TB/10TB was the largest you could find without spending over $300. You can always spend 4x as much to get double that capacity.

I'm talking about what you could get for ~$120:
1996 - 1GB
2001 - 60GB
2007 - 300GB
2010 - 1TB
2013 - 3TB
2016 - 8TB
2023 - 8TB

YTMC nand chip? Innogrit IG5236 controller? That is like the silicon power 4TB. Are they the same just different brand?

Thanks for the link. I was hoping it would be single sided for my laptop, but it does not appear so.

The Vi7000G features DRAM cache and an Innogrit IG5236 controller to offer blazing fast speeds. The DRAM chip is made by Micron and has an 8GB DDR4 density. Verbatim has used two of these chips on this SSD to offer even faster speeds.

The Verbatim Vi7000G uses four YMTC SYMN09TC1B1RC6C 3D TLC 4Gb NAND Flash chips

This says, suitable for client and not for server. Does that mean, it is not built for always on systems? I was hoping to use it for personal cloud solution, which will always stays on. Load will be minimal but it will always be on.

Hard pass for me. There is literally no information on warranty in the description and if you click on the warranty link you are directed to the contact seller. This warning from the Amazon Global Store doesn't help:

Time to build more facilities in the Western hemisphere alongside ssd manufacturing because neither is going away for a loooong time.

That's going to be a no for me because there are no links or support to any firmware updates unless someone can find it.

There's a known firmware bug with this controller that ADATA and HP drives have experienced with SMART not being smart as in affected drives don't send correct data.

https://pcpartpicker.com/forums/t...controller

Quote :
PCPartPicker's Benchmarking process examines the SMART data returned by a device many times during the benchmarking process. We've encountered 4 SSDs with the same SMART data issues:
  • Fields related to device usage intermittently reset to zero
  • Incorrect/nonsense SMART data intermittently returned
All of the affected devices use the InnoGrit IG5236 controller.

A firmware update which resolves the issue is available for the affected ADATA SSD.

PCPartPicker was unable to find firmware updates available for the other affected drives. We will only report benchmarking results for an affected device after resolving the issue with the necessary firmware update.
