Just received mine. Tested with chkdsk and passed /f /r /x.
Always test these before you deploy them on servers.

Yeah, you'll find how people who understand how to safely maintain data with backups are happy to ride out the (generally long) life left on these used enterprise drives for the significant discount.

Then you'll also find the people who have no understanding of how to protect data, or the bathtub curve of failure, getting thumbs down for their "warnings"

Let the "Seagate Sucks vs Western Digital Sucks" wars begin. I've been using several of these recertified data center drives from both manufacturers for years without any problems whatsoever but remember on a long enough timeline every drive will eventually fail. Just remember if you're storing critical data on any drive it would behoove you to practice redundancy and back it up elsewhere as well.

Nice how the page mentions a one-year, three-year, and five-year warranty!

One year from ebay refurb, 3 years from seller, 5 years for a new one from manufacturer (where the product info was from). The seller does have some refurb drives with 5 year warranty though.

So if I buy 3 of these to upgrade my 6 TB NAS (4x 2TB drives) - does that mean I need another 3? as a backup? How does everyone typically do this? I would run 3x 12TB as RAIDZ1 which gives me 24TB. I've got 2x portable USB 5TB Drives and the 4x 2 TB drives = 16GB. How do I handle backing everything up?

Or do I just not backup my Plex library and only backup irreplaceable stuff like photos and documents (which are also in the cloud).
I always keep 2 or 3 NAS running as backup. When my NAS reached the capacity, it is usually about time for it to retire. Anyway, with a second NAS or external drive for scheduled backup regularly, there is no additional work for backup before upgrading.

From your description, if you put three 12TB drives in your NAS (using the same RAID configuration that you're using now), essentially, two of them will contain data (giving you a maximum data capacity of 24TB) and one will be used as a parity drive. Unless you plan to back up to another NAS, the parity drive does not have to be backed up. You, theoretically, only need two additional 12TB drives to backup the 24TB of data.

If your budget is tight, there is no immediate need to buy the two additional drives. Since your current data maximum is only 6TB, unless you're expecting a huge influx of new data, you can do backups to your two 5TB portables until you reach the 10TB mark.

This has been posted many times before. Old drives that been riding hard. Search for it on here and read comments.
So one should not buy used car from dealer or after rental? Whoever buying should know what they are paying for. Just like cars, the start and stop spinning of the drive do more harm to the drive. Retired enterprise drive from data center is like rental car with a lot of highway miles.

I'm finally upgrading my long-suffering VMware server (thanks Broadcom, you suck) that's served faithfully for about a decade. This will do nicely as a data drive for me. I'll test it in Linux before committing it to the new server.

Also, "Limited quantity available / 4,315 sold." They had A LOT of these.

For desktop PC use, should I get this one or the HGST Ultrastar? Which one is quieter?

Was SMART data intact or wiped? How many hours on them?
On mine, most SMART data was wiped. However, it showed ~27,000 hours (over 3 years if run 24 x 7) and 16 power on operations. The other smart data isn't as easy to decode, but it looks like almost everything has been reset to new drive defaults (like error un/correctable error counts). It has been running fine under basic data copy tests and a few spot checks so far (I'll fill the drive soon).

That's pretty much the same as numerous drives I've ordered from ServerPartDeals, with the major exception being the Power-On Hours looking accurate.

can anyone chime in on the noise? not sure if I'm just use to SSDs, but when it reads and writes on both drives that i bought, it's quite noisy. One is nosier than the other. When it's idle, occasionally it would make knocking/clicking/ticking sounds as well. I'm not sure if that's normal.

Mine are definitely on the louder side, but I've been in the process of testing them for 20 hours now
