2017 was 7 years ago, not 8
Intel was introducing new 8th gen CPUs as late as Q3 2019
Scratches will be minor in B grade laptops, and close to nonexistent in A grade
Battery will be replaced if it's under 80% capacity
A used latitude in good shape will likely outlast a new Inspiron, and $399 is more than double the price of this deal.
You can return these on Dell Refurbished's dime if there is anything wrong (such as loose hinges).

I bought one of these in Sept 2023; at this price I enjoy replacing them every 2-3 years. I think this is my third or fourth used Latitude laptop. They're still useful to those I give them away to.

It's on my desk now, driving two 32" 4K monitors from the HDMI sand USB-C ports, plus the 14" screen, running 50 edge tabs, notes, outlook, chrome, and teams. I'm managing Azure & M365 resources, coding in PS via the portal. it's durable, well-supported, easy to buy parts for (I put in a 2TB drive for my photography, for which I run PS and LR Classic).

In short, a perfectly fine laptop for those who don't game.

These are great for some special use cases where you wouldn't want to spend big $$ on new hardware with the latest and most powerful processors. Case in point - I bought one of the 7400s a few weeks ago for $190 during their last sale. I got it specifically to use with the Forscan ODB II software for reading codes and tweaking options on my Ford truck. Add a $40 ODB II USB interface and I have a great fully-functional bi-directional scan tool for use with my vehicles for under $250.

A semi-pro purpose-built scan tool with same same capabilities would have run me at least $500 or more (and they typically are custom android tablets). As a bonus, this is a Windows 11 laptop that can serve other purposes.

My AMEX offer says ....
"Details: Get a one-time $40 statement credit by using your enrolled eligible Card to spend a minimum of $200 in one or more purchases online at Dell.com by 4/30/2024. See terms."

But the laptop is on dellrefurbished.com, wondering if the offer will work?
thanks for the tip. but most likely would not work. i think i had something similar a long time ago and they made promotion for both separated on the same credit card

Do you have any recommendations on ODB USB device?

Dell Latitude 7400 release date was June 2019. Our corporate was buying these models to issue to people as we headed into the pandemic in January-March 2020. They're still quite usable, and can support Windows 11. At the time they were the highest model of the Latitude line. (Now there's a 9000 series model as the new flagship.)

I bought one of these and it works great. Grade A battery was at 85% capacity. However, a brand new battery from Dell for this model is currently only $40 (down from the normal $120.) I bought one of those and am using the refurb battery as a backup. The only other things you can upgrade on this are the RAM and the drive. For $100 more, I went up to 32GB RAM and 2TB M.2 drive. (I keep remembering people in my office having 32GB and 1TB and it being really expensive only a few years ago.)

The OS keeps offering to upgrade to Windows 11 the instant you first patch Windows 10.

The only thing that annoys me is that while the black shell is cool looking and lighter, it is also a fingerprint magnet.

For the price point, I'm comparing it to a Chrome book. I get a higher quality build, the ability to run Windows programs, much better specifications, and if I hang on to it a long time, I don't run out of support/patches (especially if I upgrade to Windows 11.) As a portable web surfer with access to movies, office automation, and light gaming, this is a great system.

Edit: New battery price is now up to $130.

I see!
Just ordered the Dell Latitude 7400 Touch listed for $430 but total came out to $231 after coupon, which is good price IMO.
It's been 20 minutes and haven't seem any redemption email from AMEX so $40 off of $200 will likely not work for the refurbished stuff!

As mentioned in a previous posting, I have purchased two Dell laptops and a micro-form factor (MFF) desktop specifically refurbished by FedEx. In my case, all were above my expectations. The laptops appeared to have no wear on keyboards or touchpads. They were spotless inside with not a trace of dust. One laptop had a "skin" applied to the top but was not objectionable. Battery health was ~90%. The MFF for all practical purposes appeared brand new: It could very well of been. From reading many of these forums, it is hit or miss, but you always have the option to return them. I always select "A" grade and with laptops, select the very highest commercial grade laptop series available at the time as well as configuration. This means Dell Latitude 7000 series with I7 processors and Windows 11 capability (8th Gen Intel+). Don't forget the highest resolution available, backlit keyboard with touch screens and loaded with RAM and SDD unless you wish to upgrade those yourself. During Covid, many business class laptops mainly sat on home desks connected to external monitors and keyboards.

These come bloated down with fluff and best to fresh install Windows 11 on vs. in-line upgrade?

I bought a refurbished computer in Jan. using AMEX Blue. The statement charge says "DELL FINANCIAL SERVIROUND ROCK TX"

I doubt you'll get the $40 rebate, but I did get a 3% rebate with this card since it's an online order.

I purchased their 5310 2 in 1 model recently from dellrefurbished.com I replaced 3 times and 4th time was good. The 1st one, battery issue. and 2nd one was a touchpad button missing a good 3/4 inch paint. and 3rd time, the system was very unstable (system down for no reason, even after several resets). Finally fourth time, it was good in condition cosmetically and functionally. Their grade A is not like new. All of the replacements were grade A, but those had a lot of scratches and dings and some other imperfections. But their customer service is top-notch, they never say anything about my returns and replacements. And they sent me a new battery for the defective battery (the battery goes down super quick after 40 percent). Mine has 10th gen CPU and I paid $205 plus tax.

Hold out for a 7500 series. I pulled the trigger a while ago on a 7520 with one of these 50% off coupons, and shipped it was something like $195. It not only came with 32gb RAM, but also an onboard GPU sufficient for some older games.

Possibly the most bang-for-the-buck I've had in a computer purchase.

Is 7400 better than the 5400 series latitude laptops? Thanks

You've purchased from FedEx Recycling, not Dell. FedEx isn't Dell Outlet. They're different.

We only hear from those that got newish laptops a year or two ago, who've become big promoters in these threads. Your reality feedback is appreciated.

Any bad product shipments that are able to be returned go right back into the re-sale inventory float for the next unsuspecting buyers. That next buyer will be the third (or fourth) user. That's how these old processor laptop keep remaining in the FedEx Recycling inventory perhaps.

My experience was similar to yours but I didn't get the support that you received. FedEx Recycling wasn't willing to do any returns on the following flaws, since they didn't see anything as officially "broken" under their T&Cs:

- battery was 75% using my testing, wouldn't replace, battery drops rapidly after 40%
- scratches and missing paint on both of my "Grade A" laptop purchases, FedEx said these were surface appearance issues and it still qualifies at a "Grade A" from their definition, wouldn't replace
- occasional screen flickering on one, FedEx Recycling merely suggested it was a driver issue

I purchased two. I'm sure there are many "silent" buyers with similar experiences who we're not hearing from. If I received even one new-like good performing laptop, I might also have become a promoter of these used older laptops.

I'm happy for those that have done well in past years with the product they received. For me, and many others, it hasn't been a very good experience. No purchasor knows what they're going to receive. I've not found FedEx Recycling to be as helpful and accommodating as some have suggested. We're dealing with a "refurbisher" who's interested in getting rid of this old inventory. They don't really want them back, unless forced. I should have gone through my credit card company to push for a chargeback.

Highly YMMV.

These are 3-4 year old systems. There are plenty of reviews published on both models, allowing you to do a comparison.

The Latititude 7400 was their top-of-the-line 14" business model in 2019-2020. The 5400 was their mid-tier 14" model. The 3400 was their low-end model.
