A used latitude in good shape will likely outlast a new Inspiron, and $399 is more than double the price of this deal.
You can return these on Dell Refurbished's dime if there is anything wrong (such as loose hinges).
I bought one of these in Sept 2023; at this price I enjoy replacing them every 2-3 years. I think this is my third or fourth used Latitude laptop. They're still useful to those I give them away to.

It's on my desk now, driving two 32" 4K monitors from the HDMI sand USB-C ports, plus the 14" screen, running 50 edge tabs, notes, outlook, chrome, and teams. I'm managing Azure & M365 resources, coding in PS via the portal. it's durable, well-supported, easy to buy parts for (I put in a 2TB drive for my photography, for which I run PS and LR Classic).

In short, a perfectly fine laptop for those who don't game.
These are great for some special use cases where you wouldn't want to spend big $$ on new hardware with the latest and most powerful processors. Case in point - I bought one of the 7400s a few weeks ago for $190 during their last sale. I got it specifically to use with the Forscan ODB II software for reading codes and tweaking options on my Ford truck. Add a $40 ODB II USB interface and I have a great fully-functional bi-directional scan tool for use with my vehicles for under $250.

A semi-pro purpose-built scan tool with same same capabilities would have run me at least $500 or more (and they typically are custom android tablets). As a bonus, this is a Windows 11 laptop that can serve other purposes.

100% concur, always do a fresh install. Wiping a NVME drive is instant though you can do it from the BIOS in a few seconds. No need to waste write cycles hammering it.

I've imaged dozens of these 7400s at work the last few months and they are a bargain at
Typically the decommissioning crew is supposed to handle this on-site before they get shipped back to the vendor .. then there should be a double check at the receiving site that the disks were wiped .. also the drives on laptops should be encrypted by some security software for laptops .. thus in theory should not see customer data .. of course procedures need to be followed and sometimes there is incompetence in this

I just got mine and of course Windows wasn't wiped, asks for credentials of a chemical engineering company. I am trying to boot into recovery or into bios, but all I get is a Pre-Boot System Performance Check. Anyone have any idea how to bypass this? Booting from USB recovery media also won't work, I guess the boot sequence in Bios is set to prioritize the c: drive.

Googling wasn't helpful, people say to update bios but can't get in...

Wife just got hers today, and is walking through the setup. It appears to be in excellent shape. Be interesting to see what kind of battery life it ends up with.

I picked one up on this particular deal posting. The packing was sparse (but seemed to work), the power adapter was loose in the box with a rubber band around the cord for management.

Here's what was in the box: 1. laptop (shrink wrapped to a rigid cardboard panel to keep it centered in the box. 2. Power adapter.

You can tell the laptop exterior had a quick wipe down with a wet wipe (not very thorough) and there was less attention paid to the keyboard (hair and crumbs.)

However, once I cleaned it up a little more this thing looks (more or less) brand new. Access to the internals for upgrading RAM and SSD was super simple and you're in/out of that in 10 minutes.

For the $225, this was a nice deal on a very capable i7 laptop. Oh, also, specs say 16GB is max supported - I added 16GB and now see 32GB.

I called support and they offered to remotely reset the OS within 24-48hrs. No idea how that would work, but I wanted to give it a try before returning it. It's been past 48hrs now, called again and found out nothing has happened yet. Only good thing is that there is no wait when you call the support number and talk to the center in Romania.

Quote from BuyMoreChuck :
I picked up one of the Latitude 7400 touch screen and I also updated the memory. Here are my thoughts:

-- The machine is a good machine. The case I received was metal and is heavy compared to my other machines.
-- The overall build quality is good.
-- For general office use it is perfect.
-- It is upgradable to Windows 11.
-- The machine was wiped and I did not see too much bloatware on it.

Issues that I had:

-- The keyboard did not work out of the box. I contacted Dell and they could not send me a new keyboard but provided a credit of $30 so I could pick up a new one from the "Bay" company. Replacement keyboards were not in over abundance.
-- Essentially I had to rebuild the machine, so I also replaced the thermal paste at the same time.
-- I did run the battery test and it was borderline for replacement, so I also had that with the keyboard. I was sent a replacement battery.
-- It seems to be a known issue that the rubber strip that is a "foot" for the case does peal off and the replacement is expensive. I have tried the glues that some recommenced, but they do not work. I had to use two sided sticky tape.
-- The screen is not as bright as an older Dell Ultra machine I have or a older MacBook Air

Price paid was about the same as now.

Did it not register any of the keys or was the keyboard acting flaky? -delayed response not registering some keys?- I ordered one from this deal and I am away from home, trying to remotely diagnose the issues. My gf started it up and was telling me the keyboard is acting flaky and USB ports are not working. I remotely connected to the computer and ran the full Dell diagnostics -which it seems to pass- I did all the driver and BIOS updates. -Also the laptop is updated to Win 11 pro. The problems still persist with the keyboard and the USB ports.

This is happening after a clean windows 10 install with the NVME SSD wiped. Something must be installed in the bios or trusted platform. is there a way to get this reset?

Update:

I'm having an issue with this laptop in that it's asking me to log into the whatever corporation this laptop used to belong to's email address.

even if you install with a clean copy of windows 10 you'll still get this.

It's due to the laptop being registered to whatever corporation's Azure and never getting deregistered.

my workaround is i re-installed windows 10 professional and did not connect to internet and then created a local account. i was able to sign in and it seems to be working okay so far.

Actually everything looked perfect. My first hint, that I did not catch, is that I could not get my password entered correctly. It had a special character off the numbers on top and it did not register the special character. Then I brought up something simple like Notepad and started to type and noticed keys being missed inconsistently. So keys down in the left bottom and in the top middle were really bad. I did exactly what you did and updated everything except for upgrade to Windows 11. I then thought my issue was fixed somewhat but not completely. I had to make the decision....do I live with it ... no. I also used that as an opportunity to get a replacement battery. There is an excellent tear down video that I kind of followed, except I did not completely remove the motherboard from the screen, so I could leave that intact. I did not want to deal with getting that bezel back on and not crack something. I did goof up and when I put in the new keyboard I did not make sure all of the keys were 100% poking through the holes so my off/on button was sticking. I was able to wiggle it into place. After getting everything all together I then had issues with the machine magically restarting if the machine twisted at all. I was pretty frustrated, but found out the issue was I needed to reseat the extra memory card I installed (probably would not have happened if I had pulled the motherboard completely out. But once I figured that out, it was a quick fix.

So now it runs perfect. I would have liked a little more brightness, but it is OK. I also have some Dell Ultra and other Dells for work and the keyboard is acceptable, but not the greatest, feel wise....but this is a preference item.

Otherwise for the price, with the upgraded memory, it is a pretty inexpensive machine with 32GB of memory and a 512 SSD. The CPU is actually the same or slightly newer than my work computer, which I can upgrade at any time...but the current computer offerings I have available are not very good and the corresponding MacBook Pro is exceptional... for 2.5-3X the cost.

The other thing I do not like is the weight, but it is built like a tank and I am sure it can take some abuse..except for the keyboard.

The service center was exceptionally easy to work with, in my opinion. I did need to purchase thermal paste to reseat the CPU. You do need to remove a number of bolts on the board to get to the keyboard. Plan on an hour to 2 hours to change everything and test it out.

If you think it might be a keyboard or motherboard issue, I recommend calling support. Maybe they can send a new unit or provide you with new parts.

The USB ports are on the motherboard.

Thanks for posting - I am having the same problem with the laptop asking me to log in with a Viad Corp account name. Did you re-install Windows 10 pro with a USB drive? And was it easy to avoid connecting to the internet during the install process? Thanks.

Yep I did a clean install from a usb drive, and didn't connect to WIFI during the install process. pretty easy to avoid connecting to internet. Once the install is complete i didnt see any issues when i connected back up to the internet. I haven't heard anything back from dell on whether they can get this laptop de-registered or not, but it's been working great so far.

I was able to get to the bios, change the boot sequence and install clean from the media creation tool. That also showed the offline account options, which bypassed the azure registration. Gave me the opportunity to delete all the unnecessary partitions with Dell recovery etc.

How do people check their battery health? I ran the battery health report from Windows, am I comparing these two, so it's 76%?
