Is that 12gb ram usage on one of these M1/M2 MacBooks? I do some pretty intensive video editing with a dozen tabs open and haven't hit the cap yet, and that's on my 8gb. I wish I had 16 but I got mine for a steal so it's hard to justify an upgrade.
Macbook 14" M2 Pro. I use only one external 4k monitor. Mainly used for coding. IntelliJ, VS Code stuff open.
MB air M1 is $100 less. Is MB air M2 worth $100 more? I also got the refurb M1 from EBay shipping today at $600.
I would say it's worth the $100. The M2 has the new design with the notch at the top. You also probably paid tax on the ebay purchase. Plus 1 year of apple care. New vs refurb.

Went ahead & got the M2. Compared w/ the M1, I appreciate the extra creature comforts for only $100 more like new midnight color, slightly better screen, MagSafe, 1080p camera, better mic, better speakers, better headphone jack, better video editing, etc. Feels more modern than M1 that used old design & doubt the m3 is any different at all other than marginal increases in performance.

Awesome! I'm about to order it myself but still on the fence about the 8gb of ram. And the m3 air is supposed to release this month too, but of course at regular price.

If you're doing a lot of heavy tasks, may want to consider 16gb. Personally, I don't, so base version's fine for me. While anything can happen for M3 air, from comparisons to already released M3 pro, only marginal performance increases. Only big thing I'd personally want in the new air model is ProMotion, but haven't seen any rumors on it. Not a dealbreaker for me, but would be a great add. ProMotion on my 13 Pro Max is awesome for scrolling through content.
What I think they'll do is eventually stop production of M2 air for M3 then still have the M1 air laying around for budget buyers as the *SE* model since it's still selling like hotcakes.
8gb of ram should be just fine for most casual users. It's not like 8gb of ram on windows.
That's true if casual means browsing the internet or something simple. I had the M1 13 inch Pro with 8GB of RAM because many reviews said it's like having 16GB of RAM on Windows, but after a few months of use, I had to get rid of it because performance was horrible (beach balls effect). Had a handful of tabs for browsing, a trading app (kinda RAM intensive), and maybe Word and my MBP was dying. After moving to the 15 inch MBA with 16GB of RAM, no more issues.

Probably not. Performance different isn't significant. The year of Apple Care on the new one may be worth it over the eBay purchase.
