Then you simply don't understand processor architecture.

The main reason the i3 and i5 exist is due to yield. In many fabs, all the processors start out at the highest tier and the ones that don't qualify to be an "i7" get cut down to produce the i5 or i3. The alternative to this is simply throw them away.

A 14th Gen i3 has roughly as much processing power as a 10th Gen i7, while using less power and having more features. At the same time, a 14th Gen i5 gives 13th Gen i7s a run for their money.

Name one other product where the model that costs almost four times less begins to outclass the upper tier model in a span of four years, if ever.

Your analogy doesn't work, simply because none of these models are old. They all exist in the same generation, with the same architectural features and the "chassis" (in this case, the motherboard) is compatible with every single model.

By your analogy, it would be equivalent to being able to take the engine and drivetrain off a Lexus, swap it into a Corolla, and still end up with a Lexus at the end of it.

You might be shocked to find that there's also :gasp: an i3, Pentium, Celeron, as well as embedded processors in Intel's lineup.

The i5 is perfectly adequate for most games, especially when they're console ports that are mostly GPU bound.

Different processors serve different segments and there's a ton of overlap which I guarantee you would not care about if it weren't for benchmarks.

Saying the i7 should be the baseline just means Intel would have to put out an i11 to top the i9 that already exists.

Wait, you know about the i9, right?

So, I recommend building a PC. Get a 3080 card for 400 dollars used on the offer up. Then find a mobo and CPU combo perhaps i7 12th or 13th gen with 16 gb ddr5, 1 tb evo 980 SSD (or comparable), 750-watt corsair power supply, and decent fractal case. Win10 lic you can find for $15 *(I got one with no issues).

Get one of those ACER 1440P gaming monitors, the keyboard and mouse don't need to be mechanical. As for CPU cooler air is fine. They cost $40 and come within 3c or so from water cooling.

Total value about $1300 out of door. Will run cooler, and faster and will leave room for an upgrade on the graphic card when 5080 comes out. As for building a PC if it's the first time it's not difficult. If you have a friend that can help even better.
Right...until your windows license stops working because it is an illegal copy. Grey Market keys are cheap for a reason. Adults don't have time for this BS...and if getting a grey market key is the main reason why its cheaper to build, than its not really cheaper to build.

This. I can't imagine buying an i5 processor. I think my old yoga laptop has an i5. Why hasn't the i7 become the standard?
The desktop i5 processor is a well-rounded, good CPU. The i5 in your yoga laptop is a mobile processor, and while good for what you need it for, the desktop i5 in this case is more powerful and capable. You'd have to compare it with the i5 gen/model whats in your yoga to know the difference.

In this case, this desktop i5, for it's generation is only a step down from other i5 variants and the i7/i9 lineup. However it is several steps up from the i3, celeron, etc as another reply mentions.

Agree. People need to recognize that a lot of guys who crap on an I5 now because it doesn't hit some imaginary benchmarks that is only relevant to...Benchmarks.
In real world use...this is a fine processor that can handle anything you throw at it.
The same guys who trash it now, were praising it a year ago. And computing real world needs have not changed much in a year.
I have a I7-9700F and a 2060 S -GTX in my current PC. There is nothing I cant run comfortably. Don't believe the hype on NEEDING bleeding edge, its all a bunch of marketing hype.

Think they're cheap because their unit cost is zero. Never pay full price for the keys unless you just don't care, it's just free money for Microsoft.

Umm...no. Its money you are paying for a product that you will use.
I mean hell, why not buy a stolen Honda ?...if you buy it from the dealership, its just free money for Honda, right ?

You can go thru a million threads here on grey market keys...its a crapshoot if they work or not(and continue to work).
if you're paying any money for an OS, get one from a legitimate retailer. Your OS is one of they few things that HAS to work

This is an excellent deal. It was this price for a few days in Dec 2023 when I bought mine. Other than the keyboards, I have been very happy with my purchase.

Their keyboards on the other hand, leave a lot to be desired. My 1st one had 3 letter keys that did not work. I called them and got a free replacement shipped in 2 weeks. The 2nd one occasionally had a spacebar that wouldn't register so I would have two words be together without a space in-between.

Last Tuesday I bought a $0.99 MS keyboard from a thrift store that I'm currently typing with. I saved the CyberPowerPC keyboard as a backup.
You should really invest in even a cheap mechanical keyboard if you game or type extensively, the difference is immense and I regret all the years I spent using membrane keyboards.

I got this for my son as a gaming computer when it was the $1000 price. We were going to build one and I was getting everything around to buy and it was only slightly more expensive to get this one already built. At $900, it's an even better deal. We've had no issues playing games. He runs most of his games through XBOX Game Pass and everything runs smooth. And has a handful of Steam games and again, no issue. I'd consider this better than a starter gaming PC but not as good as a higher end one, obviously. This is a good sweet spot to have as a pre-built system.

I'd feel fairly confident this could run Fortnite at 144hz or 165hz or whatever the monitor is.
