I had never heard of this but bought it locally for a last-minute round trip drive from MA to FL; it kicks butt. Basic and not particularly pretty sitting up there, but it has heaps of room, kept everything dry, and was fairly quiet at highway speeds, all at a considerably lower price than alternatives.
(Details if useful for anyone - Sat fine on a Forester with OEM bars after I modified the holes slightly with a drill. Super easy to drill new holes if you need to, just cover the unused ones with some electrical tape.)
I have this and love it. Bought it from a Home Depot price mistake for $50 years ago. Has lots of space and holds up very well. Only thing to watch out for is all the dead bugs in the front when taking it off.
I have had this exact roof cargo system for many years and have probably used it 3-4 times or so. Never had an issue with anything getting wet or the rack flying open. At first I thought they had "modernized" the attachment system but I don't believe so. If you look at the first picture it looks like it is a quick connect system but I do not believe you get the crossbar that is shown in the picture. That is an optional part you have to buy. That said, mounting this on your vehicle is a PITA as you have to get the holes in the bottom of the clamshell exactly aligned on all four mount points on your roof rack and figure out the optimum place where to adjust the racks for best placement. As others stated that may also involve drilling holes to fit your unique rack system on your vehicle. Doing all of this by yourself is possible if you are tall but having a helper will make it go alot easier.
The other issue is that this thing is 18 cubic feet so when not in use you will need a large area available to store it. That can be a challenge if you already have a lot of stuff in your garage and/or low ceilings with no ceiling racks.
Newb question. What happens if you don't fill one of these up? Do the items slide around inside? Is there a way to secure things inside the box if you only use half the space? I keep envisioning things sliding forwards and back as you accelerate and stop.

This one doesn't have any tie down points. I replaced mine with a Rhino Rack and it has built in anchor points with removable straps to secure things.
$183 is a steal for this box though. I sold my used one for much more than this just a week ago.
I've had these for a few years now. Use them almost every week since I drive between 2 living places every week and I have kids. This is a lifesaver. I use it with the CargoLoc roof bars which are sort of oval shaped. They attach fine to it. I don't take it down too often but I agree they are a PITA to take down. Every so often, I do have to tighten the knobs inside the box, but nothing to the point of where it's loose. You don't need to fill it up. Once the bags you are putting have some heft to it, it should stay relatively still unless you're drag racing or something. I did leave a loose battery up there once, and I could hear every time it moved because it rolls. This is an amazing price for this. I think I paid like $300-$350 when I bought mine. I'm tempted to repurchase this again just because of the price. Honestly, it's great. Btw, because of the cargoloc roof bars, I actually don't take the box very often off the bars. When I do have to take the cargo box off, I usually just remove the roof bars with the box still attached and that makes it easier.

We normally put soft items likes clothes and pack them with the heavier stuff which is on the bottom. I always fill this as much as possible which leaves more room in the car for passengers. Never had any issues.
I also agree, it isn't the prettiest. But I value usefulness over beauty. I have a huge GS dog that I take around a lot as well so I have her sit in the back comfortably because I am using the cargo box to carry most of my bags. Only thing is, beware of parking garages in big cities. Sometimes I would forget to take it down if I'm going to a concert somewhere in a big city and a lot of those cities have parking garages and with this on top of the car, adds about a foot or so to the height of the car. In my case, I can just barely get in to places that have a clearance of 7 feet. So if you're in a city and park a lot on garages, beware of that. Also, you can't really go to a reg car wash with these. The ones with the spinny cloth things. Just because I don't really like taking the box off, I go to one of those touchless car washes in the winter where it uses just pressurised water.
