I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

Check out the Slate AX instead--it's only slightly bigger and supports EAP.
What's EAP?

I got the $15 one for a travel media server. Works well for that purpose. The thing had almost no free space and I had to format a usb disk to add extra overlay space and mount it which seemed to reset the device. Not sure if it came like this from the factory or it was a bad firmware update (that I did right away). There wasn't any official support on that topic, I found the workaround on some reddit post. I assume this device is better but I'd probably consider another brand if I weren't willing to tinker with linux.
Edit to add in order to get Samba (file sharing with Windows) I had to ssh to the device and run some commands. I assume that will scare away some people.

I am decent with tech stuff, but networking is not in my wheelhouse. How difficult is this to configure?

I own the Beryl (GL-MT1300 previous model) Opal (GL-SFT1200) and Mango (GL-MT300N-V2) versions of this router/AP. They are outstanding, and yes they are great for travel, especially sharing a hotspot that might be limited to one device due to their support for Wifi client mode.

Although this price isn't fantastic, it's good. If you need one this price is fine. If you want one just to have around, they can go lower especially when GL releases a newer model.

If you don't want to spend this much but want most of the features, consider the Opal B09N72FMH5, shows right now as 15% off with coupon, making it $34 for Prime.

These routers are extremely powerful, running OpenWRT and the LUCI web interface.

Great little travel router! I got the AX (upgrading from the previous Beryl) - I've used this on 2 of our family trips w/ wifi captive portals. Works wonderful. We stayed at a 2-story Chalet/cabin in January up near Yosemite and the wifi coverage was strong.

Since they use OpenWRT and LUCI, there are many guides available for how to set them up using that software, since it is almost the same on all routers. You can use the GL interface or the open LUCI interface. Look around at those guides for an idea of how hard they are to setup.

I don't know why this could be a deal.
It shows that $51 is my Amazon business account.
Last few weeks , GL.iNet did dump out most obsoleted routers for under $20.
I wish the MT3000 soon to be under $30

strange, the base price before coupon on my amazon business account is $107.90, which only brings down to $83.89 after the coupon
Yes, it changes for me to $107.9 as well, likely the deal for business account is dead. I paid $57 all-in when I ordered.

Yes - you use this in conjunction with the app Easytether. Android only, if you have an IPhone then you're paying the Apple tax.
You're sure easytether is not detectedby ghe carrier? I got tmobile and have a 2gb cap for hostspot

Can someone share a guide on how people use routers like this to work abroad while VPNing to the States? I've been googling but don't seem to know the search term to reach a straightforward guid.

Been trying to figure out which of GL.iNet routers are best for this, or if this router works well.
