The way to tell how old your product is: check your firmware and compare to the current version. If it is current or maybe one minor version behind or two, it is pretty current. When I received my Slate plus (from amazon) it was 1 minor version behind. e.g. If V3.12 is latest, V3.11 is one minor version behind, V2.01 is a major version behind
My order from Gl.inet arrived today with firmware version is 4.4.6 released on Oct 8th, 2023. Just one version behind newest 4.5.0 released on Jan 23rd, 2024.

Most phones now have a hotspot option where it essentially acts as a repeater. Can't you just do that instead?

The new device I will preconfigure with my home vpn/torguard/windscribe/tailscale and adguard home.
These are great like others have said if you have a lot of IT devices and don't want to have to spend time configuring them all to connect to a given Wi-Fi. I even use it when I go over to friends and family members houses And have my tech bag.
The major advantage to this over your phones hotspot, is this won't use the limited data that you're given with a hotspot. And you have security for all your devices and remote access out of the box. It's ahuge time saver.

First, the unit they sent me was defective. Wouldn't turn on at all. They sent me a replacement, and i could not get it to work in wifi relay mode. Took several hours of trying multiple different firmware versions to finally get it to work. Hopefully they've ironed out all the kinks by now, but if not, you should be ready to flash different firmware versions until you find the one that works for you
