I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

Didn't you set it in repeater mode, and then just login from there?
Yes, wifi repeater mode. And no, it wasn't working so seamlessly. At the airports I couldnt get the captive portal to come up at all (airports). Even after trying to connect to nossl.com (per some reddit recommendations). At my hotel, I could get the captive portal to sometimes load — and once I entered my name and room number into the portal, the portal page would sit at 'processing' the request. Directly connecting to the hotel wifi, my ipad and phone had no issues connecting to and getting past the captive portal. Again, the device is really slick. Love the ability to stream movies right off the USB drive and not have to fill up my devices. But I'm thinking most portals have just figured out how to outsmart this router.

Hmm - that's disappointing as I'm on the fence as to whether to buy this vs a slate AX or plus. I thought there was an EAP issue with the Beryl that was fixed with the latest firmware update, but maybe that's incorrect. I had also read you could log in with your phone and then copy the MAC address to the router. Your input made this a tougher decision for me lol! But thx for sharing.

Simple, Opened the package. The quickstart had a code to scan and a web page to get documentation. The link to documementation was obsolete and one version behind. I then checked the installed firmware and it was years old. I updated the firmware using their link and it was one major revision behind. Only after I ignored the link and did a search did I find the current version. Did a search when they released the current major revision and it was several years ago. Did a search when they started selling the hardware with that firmware and it was several years ago. So it was new old stock. I do not know how to ID the hardware revision, but I do know that they update their hardware like most manufacturers. So probably they have a list of serial numbers and hardware versions.

The way to tell how old your product is: check your firmware and compare to the current version. If it is current or maybe one minor version behind or two, it is pretty current. When I received my Slate plus (from amazon) it was 1 minor version behind. e.g. If V3.12 is latest, V3.11 is one minor version behind, V2.01 is a major version behind

My order from Gl.inet arrived today with firmware version is 4.4.6 released on Oct 8th, 2023. Just one version behind newest 4.5.0 released on Jan 23rd, 2024.

Upgrade straight to beta version 4.6.0 for EAP support.

This is good for me, not an old stock, free tax and free travel case

It is disappointing. I bought the router at full price specifically to use on this Europe trip. The MAC cloning thing is particularly a pain in the ass for iphone users as by default your iphone will randomize the MAC for privacy purposes. So you can't just program the travel router to always use your regular MAC address. There will have to be some override somewhere. You're either always disabling MAC randomization for each SSID, or you're programming a new a MAC to your router. Regardless, I still couldn't get the MAC cloning thing to help with the captive portal situation.

Yeah, I think you're convincing me to forego this sale and get a Slate as I'm an iPhone user as well. Thanks for posting your experience!

I don't quite understand the utility of this aside from the VPN tunneling.

Most phones now have a hotspot option where it essentially acts as a repeater. Can't you just do that instead?

I believe not everyone has the data capacity to run workstation all day, also it's faster to tie into the local wifi on main ISP instead of over the air. So with those in mind, a secured tunnel is necessary instead of jumping into a public pool where random guys can run Wireshark and sniff your packets

Grabbed one, I have the previous generation, I use it all the time, it is getting so it does not support the latest features/beta software. Tinkering behind the scenes to make things work is taking to much time……My game plan is to use it as a backup/extender/file server or a drop box at relatives houses for easy remote repairs.

The new device I will preconfigure with my home vpn/torguard/windscribe/tailscale and adguard home.

These are great like others have said if you have a lot of IT devices and don't want to have to spend time configuring them all to connect to a given Wi-Fi. I even use it when I go over to friends and family members houses And have my tech bag.

The major advantage to this over your phones hotspot, is this won't use the limited data that you're given with a hotspot. And you have security for all your devices and remote access out of the box. It's ahuge time saver.

I bought this router few weeks for few dollars more. This is the first computer equipment I own that has no on/off switch. I feel uneasy to just unplug. I have had config file corrupted on some other router in the past when it was improperly shut down.

I have this unit. I also have the Slate AX. I got the Slate first. While the Slate worked great right out of the box, this unit has given me problems.

First, the unit they sent me was defective. Wouldn't turn on at all. They sent me a replacement, and i could not get it to work in wifi relay mode. Took several hours of trying multiple different firmware versions to finally get it to work. Hopefully they've ironed out all the kinks by now, but if not, you should be ready to flash different firmware versions until you find the one that works for you
