The refurb Latitude 7410 was on sale last week for 50% off. I picked up the 2-in-1 version for $275 with 10th gen i7 processor, 256gb ssd, and 16gb ram, Grade A. Excellent machine so far. If I it didn't have the refurb sticker on the bottom you would swear it was brand new. I'm sure the processor isn't as good as the new new i7 but for what I use it for (household stuff, light business stuff, web surfing), it is more than adequate.

This is my second refurb Dell Latitude. My first was an E7250 purchased in 2015. It still works and if it wasn't for the screen being terrible on that model (720p and not bright at all), I would still use it today. That model did run hot and the fan was loud ... which was an annoyance but nothing I minded too much.

If you want a solid laptop without breaking the bank then an off-lease/refurbished Latitude is a good investment, IMO. They last much longer than any consumer grade laptop I've ever used.
Depends

This Inspiron is a 13" model so it's more compact
And as you said, Latitudes are built better. Essentially designed to also be used as desktop replacements and sit on 24/7/365 for years.

I am looking for a Latitude but I think I need to strike this one off my list b/c RAM is soldered. I missed the i7 deals in the last Latitude coupon promo. They were even cheaper than this, but ram came with 32GB and 1TB SSD, so no upgrading was even needed. and better i7. I would probably still buy a new $45 battery, open up the bottom plate, clean everything, install new battery, and then set Dell Power Management to limit charge to 80%.
I hope they get more back in stock

I bought one too. but it is heating and the fan is making too much noise. Also, will "performance " setting the battery drained in 30 mins.

I bought the extended warranty but not sure holes to use that as dell support is asking it is not a hardware warranty

i ended up deciding against going with one of them
instead i bought the HP elitebook from that micro center deal. it's brand new. just "old" new stock (model is 3 yrs old).

It looks like my Inspiron 15 5505 that I bought as a refurb a couple of years ago needs a new motherboard. CPU speed is locked at .38ghz and I've tried everything I can find online to break out of it. CPU temp never gets above 38°C but HWInfo shows thermal throttling for "EXT" (something other than the CPU I guess).

Just deciding whether I want to screw around replacing the MB or just get something else all together. Liked the 5505 when it actually ran. Now it takes literally 3 or 4 minutes to open up a browser window.

It's probably one of the sensors on the motherboard that monitor CPU/component temperature, if they show wrong data then MB thinks it's overheating and limits the speed, check also if it's common enough that might be BIOS thing and they might make a fix but if it's hardware then it will need another MB.

Just wondering how limiting charge to 80% helps.
I think Batteries have a given number of charge and discharge cycles and reducing charge levels only help in killing the battery sooner.

the charge/discharge cycle rating is an estimate based on the heat and how long (time) that heat is produced from said cycles.

batteries get the hottest and charge the slowest from 80%-100%...so you are adding heat and time. batteries rely on surface area to increase performance and capacity. as capacity fills up the amount of available reactive material becomes less and less. so in order to reach 100% and maintain 100% (ie it's left plugged in and on 24/7 so it bounces around between 95%-100% which is normal behavior when you don't have a charge limiter) it has to spend a lot of time shoving the electrons really hard into the battery continuously. this produces a lot of heat. so in the case of leaving it plugged in all the time, you end up putting the battery in the worst charge range possible, all of the time.

limiting the charge to 80% or even 60% as some firmwares allow, means you are in a charge range that's easier on the battery by producing less heat

example: to go from 55% to 60%, may take 5 minutes. but to go from 95% to 100%, may take 15 mins

I've tried the latest BIOS and 2 versions back. Re-installed windows, all that did was got rid of all the programs I use. Repasted the heatsink to the CPU this morning as a last resort, lowered core temp a couple degrees to 35. It's so far under a temp that should give it problems that I didn't have high expectations it would help. HWInfo has a zillion sensor readings but not a one reported is even close to warm enough to be a cause.

Wish there was a program to override the throttle. I'd try it even if it might potentialy fry the CPU or MB. Neither Ryzen Master or ThrottleStop support the CPU. Ryzen Master's replacement doesn't appear to address throttling at all, just fan & power settings.

Leaning towards a new laptop. I can handle replacing the motherboard. But "used" ones are going for $125 - $150. No guarantee it'll fix the problem. .

Received mine today. Cosmetically is is not 100% mint but sill in good condition. There are quite a few light scratches on the bottom cover but I do not care too much given the price point. No scratches or dent on other places. Screen, keyboard and touch pad are all in good shape. It comes with a finger printer reader which is nice to have.

But the battery is close to dead: the Windows battery report says the design battery capacity is 51000 mWh while the real capacity is 32000 mWh when fully charged. After fully charged, estimated Windows run time is less than 3 hours. It's about 60% of design capacity.

Will contact Dell to ship a new battery on Monday. Otherwise has to return it.

Got my replacement battery from Dell today; installation is easy. Looks like new since the battery capacity is full now.
