Yeah, but were they shaped like little bombs, and did they come in a tin?
cotton balls covered with Vaseline works well also.

These aren't very good. I usually had to use more than 1 to get the charcoal's going. I went back to using my charcoal chimney before I bought a knock off grill blazer grill gun. The thing is like a flamethrower for charcoal!

A little bit of olive oil on some newspaper or junk mail is the best hack I've come across. Always have both on hand and very cheap.

Who's watching you start the fire that is judging how classy you do it?

I don't recommend charcoal chimneys. I had one and while it did do a good job at lighting the charcoal, it also set my kitchen counter on fire and filled up the entire house with smoke.

As a few others have mentioned. A $2 bottle of 91% alcohol from walmart, $2 bag of cotton balls, and an old jar work great. I used to use Weber lighter cubes which went up from $5 to $8 for a 24 pack. Now I just fill an old pasta sauce or salsa jar with cotton balls pour in the 91% alcohol and you have more than a hundred fire starters for a few bucks. I only use one or two when lighting charcoal using a charcoal chimney. Set under chimney, light, and walk away for 15 mins. Come back and dump coals when like 75% lit.

I use a $2 Target clearance Weber electric loop starter with a charcoal chimney.

I will forever regret not buying a few of the Looft Lighter starters [amazon.com] when the Williams Sonoma outlet near me had a pallet of them in store for around $15 each.

1. Wad up cotton ball sized chunks of dryer lint
2. Wind a 6 inch length of thin twine around them
3. Place them in an egg carton, preferably paper
4. Pour melted candle wax over them

After they cool, separate them and store them in a plastic bag. They work in any weather. Take one out, find the end of the twine and pull it away from the ball a little. Light the piece of twine as you would a candle wick. Place it under your fire lay. 100% effective and free.

I heard doritos chips works really well as a fire starter, but I'd feel guilty for burning something I can eat

Just save your old candles when they get ready to be thrown out.
