New wording for Metro unlock policy:

https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/t...ock-policy

"Unlock eligibility requirements
We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
  • The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
  • The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
  • Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date."
Should obviously only apply to purchases made after they changed the rules.
But might have to fight for that...
yike!

Ooof, glad I made sure to wayback-archive [archive.org] that page recently prior to the change.
I went ahead and made a new archive [archive.org] just now to reflect the timing of the change.

As far as I'm concerned, one has to agree to the ToS when purchasing a phone, so I expect that the ToS that was active at the time of one's purchase would be the one applicable.

Otherise I'd consider it a bait-and-switch tactic on their end. You hear that FCC? Expect a good number more issues to be opened against Metro if they try to pull a fast one.

EDIT0: Shoot, maybe even FTC as well if they try anything funny.

Depending on how this policy is implemented on the backend, this change could affect previously sold phones. If they populate their database with device's unlocking date at the time of activation then there should be no issues with anything sold prior to today. However, if they take device's activation date and then add the configured duration when someone tries to unlock then this change will be retroactive.
having dealt with these dirtbags, it'll be the latter if the feel they can get away it.

When Tracfone changed their policy (to get less restrictive), they gave a specific date. Any sale before the date was 12 months unlock, any sale after 60 days.

Hopefully Metro will give similar clarity.

I mean we were already waiting 6 months so what's a year. This only really affects the phone scalpers

Just glad they don't require full year paid service

Does this imply that everybody who purchased a phone on this deal could be at risk of having their phone locked to the network?

considered stocking up on these to sell in 6 months but only ended up with three 11s, two 12s and the $20 tablet that i will only use on wifi. now considering just dumping them all for credit to get a 16 when they come out...this way i don't have to worry if they'll unlock in 5 months. was going to keep the 12s for me and my mom but don't know now.
