Now they've done it...
New wording for Metro unlock policy:

https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/t...ock-policy

"Unlock eligibility requirements
We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:

The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date."

Should obviously only apply to purchases made after they changed the rules.
But might have to fight for that...
scroll down to Port your Google Voice number out to another carrier

hmm after my order failed my google voice has no option to lock or unlock
This is a terrible thing. It happened to me almost 3 times. Once a year ago on a similar deal. Then once with the bestbuy Oneplus nord deal. Me and my friend lost 3 GV numbers this way.

I believe basically once you unlock GV for a carrier the port out request come to GV. But if the order is cancelled or port is failed - GV puts the status of number as indeterminate. You will only have the "Delete" button. There will be no lock or unlock button. Furthermore you will never be able to port out this number anywhere else as Google thinks it was done before. So you're kind of stuck with this number forever unless you delete it.

May I know what phone you ordered - was it iphone 12?
I am trying to console myself by saying that I already have too many phones. And just because something is cheap doesn't make it a worthwhile purchase.
I ordered an iPhone12. I also already have too many phones, and I don't like Apple ecosystem, but the iPhone12 can be useful for me. It's about the same size as my main phone (Samsung S24), has good screen and specs. I use Tracfone and currently they only support eSIM on iPhone12 or later, not eSIM on Android phones. So I can experiment with that. There are some online movies deals that are only available on Apple devices. If I don't like it, I can always resell it after unlocking and make some profit.

That's my current status. Lost $3 I guess on the unlock.

I thought unlocking it would allow me to port out anytime, didn't it?

Don't turn on Autopay. Don't pay for the 2nd month. Metro will suspend your line after the 1st month, then cancel your account a month later.

never again am I dealing with Metro, or any port in deal for that matter. I thought the number would not work for metro again, no big deal. I had no idea that I can never port it anywhere after this.

WHY was this not clearly written in the deal description. important things like this should be clearly stated.

so can you delete the number, get a new number and be able to port somewhere?

It's the exact same thing with me. I hate Apple with a passion, just don't like their business practices and what the company stands for. I have a family member who only uses iOS so I usually buy for them. However, the problem with the iphone 12 is that it's just 64 GB which is not enough space. So I'm hoping that if I get this deal, I can hold on to it - wait for it to unlock and then trade it in for a larger capacity iphone (13 or after) or potentially an Android phone. I have one iPhone 11 from Metro deal last year, but that is also 64 GB and now trade in values for iPh 11 aren't as good.

Yes. But now that the port failed once, Google has changed the status of the number. You can never port it out again. A GV number that can be ported out always shows lock or unlock button.

This is correct. That is the only way - to delete this number and get a new number - if you need to port it out. However please be aware that getting too many GV numbers, results in Google blocking you from getting new GV numbers forever.

I always use the 94043 zip code - which is GV HQ.

Oh I see. I could find that on google voice FAQ page. I don't see relock button so that is my case then...
