Many homes have natural gas piped in and have exterior hookups. Propane is much more commonly tank based (although I have a large propane tank and a rear of home hookup for grill/etc).

I have 4 natural gas points in the back yard so I wanted to take advantage of that. One of them I specifically put in for a permanent heater fixture.

I think in general it's 2-3lbs per hour. It's an expensive but fast and convenient way to heat a remote area.
