  • About the film:
    • H.G. Wells' chilling novel of a Martian invasion of Earth becomes even more frightening in this 1952 film adaptation that's widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. An Oscar. winner for Best Special Effects, The War of the Worlds delivers eye-popping thrills, laser-hot action and unrelenting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. No one who has seen the film's depiction of the swan-shaped Martian machines-ticking and hissing menacingly as they cut their path of destruction-will ever forget their ominous impact!

The 3 "must have" sci-fi classics from the 50s are War of the Worlds; Forbidden Planet; and The Day the Earth Stood Still. I do not like the remake versions of the first and third movies listed. The psychological effect of WW II, immediately followed by the Cold War, is felt in many of the 50s and 60s sci-fi/horror films.

I don't believe it has been quite 70 years since the Tom Cruise movie.

Thank you, OP. I've been meaning to look for good 4k versions of this and Forbidden Planet. Had $10 left on an Amazon GC. Nice timing!

Still enjoy my Criterion. Only one major flaw with the 4k, but that shouldn't detract people from getting this masterpiece.

One of the best alien invasion movies of all time, and it's over 70 years old!
