I own both the quest 2 and the quest 3, and wanted to give some insight into people who are on the fence.
The Quest 3, while being $499, is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over the Quest 2.
-The quest 3 has a huge resolution bump over the quest 2. Honestly the quest 2 is pretty blurry and feels like a budget headset. There's significant screen door effect (you can see the pixels and looks like you are staring through a screen door while the quest 3 eliminates this problem). Not only this but the new lenses makes the image sharp all the way through while the quest 2 feels blurry depending on where you look.
-The quest 3 is much more comfortable to wear because of better weight distribution. This is huge when you plan to play for more than 20-30 minutes because the two gives a lot of fatigue because of the weird weight distribution.
-The 3 uses a new set of lenses called pancake lenses which greatly increase the field of view from 95 degrees to 110 degrees. This makes it much more immersive and life like. In the quest 2, you can very easily see the edges of the image which is immersion breaking.
-The quest 3 has more accurate tracking and allows you to use mixed reality/augmented reality because of the pass through cameras in the front. The quest 2 does not allow this. This is very important when you want to be able to see your surroundings without having to take your headset off. It also makes the head set more future proof.
-I used the mixed reality on my quest 3 to learn piano. The piano notes came
Down like in guitar hero on my
Own piano in real time. It was an amazing feature that greatly expanded the capabilities past just gaming.
Honestly, unless you are an extreme casual, I would pass on the quest 2 even at this price. If you just plan to vary occasionally use it then go for it but otherwise, I would say that the quest 3 is definitely worth the money and this is coming from someone who loves to save money. To be honest, it's pretty surprising just how much Meta upgraded the headset over their previous iteration. It feels like a next gen product now and is by far the best value on the market. The Quest 2 never made me feel that way even when it was new.
I love the idea of VR, but in practice, it's just a neat toy that's cumbersome to use and gets boring quick. This is my opinion though, and I understand fully, that some folks live and die by VR, but these people are the exception, not the rule. I have five or six friends that also have VR headsets (mostly quest 2), and only one of them use it consistently.
I understand the quest 3 is fairly more advanced but doubt it would lead me to using it any extra, I if I paid double, I'd be very disappointed.

As someone who tried it, I am saving money and/or waiting for Quest 3 to drop its price/sale. Second one is good but it hurt my eyes and AR wasn't good (which i heard is a huge improvement in Quest 3)

1. Keep me grounded since full VR experiences can make me motion sick
2. Make sure I am not going to kick the cats if they manage to get into the room while I am using the headset
My wife ultimately pushed for me to get a Meta Quest 3 with color pass through, but I have to say I think I would have been equally happy with the Quest 2 for my use. The color pass-through view of the room is still fairly grainy on the Quest 3. That said, this is the first exercise machine that I actually look forward to using on a consistent basis. I'm sure I look ridiculous shadow boxing while playing Thrill of the Fight in my living room, but it makes a fun and engaging experience out of a vigorous high intensity interval cardio workout where you shadow box a virtual opponent. I regularly hit 80% of my peak heart rate towards the end of each 3 minute boxing round without forcing and reminding myself to try harder beyond the natural "I want to win this fight". That effect hasn't gone away as my cardio fitness levels have improved as I just find myself doing more weaving/slipping to avoid punches and throwing more combinations which naturally bring my heart rate to the same levels while I perform even more movement. Trying to push myself on other cardio-focused equipment has always taken a concerted effort while Thrill of the Fight is just playing a game and naturally pushing myself to try to win.
My 60 year old mother-in-law has also been using a Quest 2 for full VR experiences with exercise-focused games like Supernatural and Les Mills Body Combat on a daily basis for the past 3 months. There are many similar stories to mine on reddit for long-term users of the Quest 2 and 3 primarily for exercise.
While it's not a replacement for weight training, if you view it as exercise equipment or replacement for a gym membership where all you would do is use a treadmill, it's relatively cheap in that context and pays for itself pretty quickly. With some gym memberships, a Quest 2 at this price would already put you ahead in the first month even if you stopped using it. The Quest 2 is a cheaper way to get your feet wet and find out if this type of use would take off for you the way it has in my extended family. I have already gotten my "gym membership" fees-worth out of the more expensive Quest 3 and expect to continue using it as a regular part of my exercise regimen to largely replace the time I used to spend on a rowing machine.

1. Am I able to take office zoom calls, make WhatsApp audio/video calls using this?
2. I code and use two monitors for office work. Am I able to connect my monitors to this and code/slack/Outlook without needing to look at my physical monitors?
(I am expecting too much, am I not?)
And if the above isn't enough, then consider that Half-Life Alyx has around 8-10 God tier mods (entire new games) that you can select from that are on the same caliber as the original HL Alyx maps. There's also Half-Life 2 VR, Half-Life 1 VR (on steam or on SideQuest as Lambda1VR). There's Low-Fi, which is like a sandbox Blade Runner indie title where you can walk or fly around an incredibly similar city as the movie. Pavlov VR is similar to Counter-Strike. QuestZDoom (from Sidequest) is also amazing, and has a launch with a million different mods/maps/submods that you can select from and auto install. If you enjoy Skyrim VR, then there's Wabbajack to auto install hundreds of mods for you (such as EnderalVREssentials to play Enderal in VR + enhancements). If you like Fallout 4 VR, then there's the Modern Tactical Overhaul, which looks and plays like an entirely new and modernized game experience (another wabbajack install). There's Cyberpunk 2077 VR mods (Vorpx or Lukeross). The list goes on.
Again, these are experiences from casually browsing for years, so if you found nothing of interest in all those years, then it's pretty strange to me. If you actually bother to look, then you'll find some amazing things to try out. Yes, actual REAL LIFE experiences will always trump VR, but at least you aren't sitting around (usually) when playing in VR (vs staring at the TV or console/PC games), as you are usually constantly moving.

I saw the Quest 3 demo at Best Buy and the new lenses on the Quest 3 sold me. They are significantly better than the Quest 2 and I am now using my Quest 3 a couple of times a week because its a much more enjoyable experience.
I also think VR headsets are only really worth purchasing if you're into gaming. There are other use cases but I personally think doing work, exercising, watching movies, etc. are more of a novelty than a core reason to use this type of device.
I still think this is a pretty solid deal for someone who understands the concessions they're making and understandably doesn't have the budget for a $499 Quest 3. However, if $199 is in your budget range, you may be better off waiting it out to see if the Quest 3 Lite gets released as it is rumored to be in this price range and will likely have some technical advantages over the Quest 2.
