I've heard good things about Sonos refurb in that they're basically new, but up to individual preference.
I'd check the features list to see if there are things from Era 100 that you really want, but this will be fairly good audio compared to Era 100 and much cheaper because they're being discontinued. If you're using these for surround audio, I'd totally just get the One SL, if you're using it for music listening, the decision is a bit more nuanced.

> You get to keep your current unit, but can't use it again as part of the "upgrade" program
means you can't use the discount again, not that you can't use the device. Originally the upgrade program actually did disable the device in fact, but they walked back on that a while ago.
I kind of "got got" in the sense that I wanted to spend $200 on some audio equipment and now I'm more than $1k in (and probably more to come). But also I've been really happy with Sonos products so far.
The "upgrade" program is basically like you said a loyalty program, but it further decreases the friction for a user to acquire device after device.

What's the scam about them? Give some
Context
They ran into a buzz saw in years past when they stopped supporting hardware. Sonos said the hardware got too outdated for their software updates. It also mentioned that the old hardware wasn't compatible with the newer hardware so they couldn't play together on the same software.
I believe they do the upgrade program so people can upgrade well ahead of the hardware losing its support.
It was a limited sale .. still get credit.. what few co do that .. just a loyalty customer discount as they know they will stop supporting old speakers at some point point
