Era 300s are a much better upgrade from Play Ones. I use them for rear surrounds. However, they are enormous in size by comparison. Make sure they pass the wife test first. Era 100's aren't an upgrade to Play One's. Sonos may still have their 30% trade in coupon option (where you don't actually trade anything in) and a pair of Era 300's was $625+tax.
That's not at all what they do. You can still use the old unit, they don't disable it.
Probably decent. Imo I'd rather upgrade to era 300 (better Atmos) or downgrade to Sonos Ones (about 2/3 or half the price, probably 8-90% of the performance, which for rears isn't that noticable) or even ikea symfonisk

Edit: Refurbished One SL (no voice assistant) are on sale right now for $119 each, so $240 for a pair.

I've heard good things about Sonos refurb in that they're basically new, but up to individual preference.

I'd check the features list to see if there are things from Era 100 that you really want, but this will be fairly good audio compared to Era 100 and much cheaper because they're being discontinued. If you're using these for surround audio, I'd totally just get the One SL, if you're using it for music listening, the decision is a bit more nuanced.

That's dumb. Why would they disable it if they don't take it. I can sell it later if i want. Corporate America has gone too far on greed. I buy stuff I own it. Manufacturer shouldn't be able to disable anything remotely unless they refund me entire price I paid.
I don't think they disable it, you just can't use it again for their upgrade.

Gotcha I thought you said can't use them again and missed to upgrade
in your defence, the wording was kind of confusing.
> You get to keep your current unit, but can't use it again as part of the "upgrade" program
means you can't use the discount again, not that you can't use the device. Originally the upgrade program actually did disable the device in fact, but they walked back on that a while ago.

Maybe think of it more as a "loyalty" reward for being a current Sonos owner.
it makes total sense if you think about the business model. Sonos does a really excellent job of pulling people into their ecosystem and then expanding. I bought a Sonos One years back because it was a decently-priced, easy to set up, premium wifi speaker. Then I decided to get another one so I could have stereo pairing. Then I wanted to connect to my TV so I added a Playbar. This week I just bought a Sonos Sub
I kind of "got got" in the sense that I wanted to spend $200 on some audio equipment and now I'm more than $1k in (and probably more to come). But also I've been really happy with Sonos products so far.
The "upgrade" program is basically like you said a loyalty program, but it further decreases the friction for a user to acquire device after device.

They're awesome rear speakers to go with the Arc/Sub. I don't know maybe 300 are better. But these are very powerful and more than adequate. If you intend to use them by themselves they are still good.

They ran into a buzz saw in years past when they stopped supporting hardware. Sonos said the hardware got too outdated for their software updates. It also mentioned that the old hardware wasn't compatible with the newer hardware so they couldn't play together on the same software.

I believe they do the upgrade program so people can upgrade well ahead of the hardware losing its support.

It was a limited sale .. still get credit.. what few co do that .. just a loyalty customer discount as they know they will stop supporting old speakers at some point point

Thank you for this. I have the Era 300 + Arc and love the combo, but was looking for something basic for the bathroom and this is great.
