Because it's an extremely well spec'ed US made guitar with a nitro finish for $1200.

Franklin buys up the returns from Fender. and refurbs them Sometimes they refinish the neck and stick a new serial number on it.... Sometimes all they do is stamp USED onto the back of the neck. yuck. Sometimes they dont and just verify things are ok.

Sometimes Franklin gets excess inventory and liquidates them.

But don't expect a mint guitar as the description says the one you get _might_ have some scratches.

I've complained to reverb in the past. Dealers selling refurbs as Brand New or Excellent. Suggested Reverb add a category called Refurbed. They were looking into it.

wow, that's a good deal. I remember getting anxious about the idea of buying one of those for $1600-ish.

Are you sure the body is smaller than an american ultra? AFAIK the american ultra already has a smaller body than say, an American Pro II or whatever.

I think so. Fender call it scale-down body. There is space around the body when sitting in the same Fender molded case used by Pro II / Ultra.

Anything I have ordered from FGW listed as 'Mint' has come sealed new in the box. I guess they have to not say new on them for some reason.

I would definitely prefer an Ultra at this price. Not a huge fan of the two pastel colors.
