Both the aluminum and fiberglass pole options are the same price? Unless there's something seriously deficient about the type of aluminum Moosejaw uses, by all means opt for the aluminum over the fiberglass.

It's not reflected in the official specs, but aluminum poles are lighter than fiberglass. They also don't splinter. Fiberglass has an unfortunate tendency to crack and splinter, especially if the ends are not fully seated in the ferrule of the adjoining pole section. I've used both and will never go back to fiberglass poles.

I'm thinking this tent was specifically make for Walmart. I know they bought out Moosejaw a couple years ago, but this tent isn't listed anywhere on the Moosejaw site, or any other Moosejaw branded tent as far as I can tell. But a four person tent with aluminum poles for 100 bucks still seems like a good deal anyway.

Thinking about picking this up for my families first tent. My wife and I and our 2 kids (7 and 3). Wondering if this is the best option for the price or if I should look at something else?

Oh thanks. I didn't realize that Walmart didn't own them anymore.

It looks like it was on the Moosejaw website at one time, called "The Comfortress." Outside Magazine [outsideonline.com] had a review last year.

Tent manufacturers push the # of people per tent for marketing. So per specs it would work for your fam. Many people say double the tent size for the people. So I would recommend at least a 6 person preferably a 8 person even with young kids. Everyone will have a clothes bag of sorts and other things, the tent will fill up quickly and you may find that you should have gone for a bigger tent. There is a 8 person version on Walmart but it's over 3x the price of this deal.
I replaced my 4p tent for another 4p tent last spring. Its just for me and sig. and a dog. Dif design and it feels at least 30% bigger than the other 4p. So it can also vary by manuf. On how big the tent is. I was considering the 6p version at the time.

Walmart has a 90 day return policy and fast shipping, so it could be worth ordering it to put it up in the driveway or garage and see how it feels for you. Another reasonably priced option is the Coleman Tenaya Lake. It's a cabin-style 8-person tent, but similar footprint to the Moosejaw with the vestibule. I like that the Moosejaw has a full rainfly. Tenaya Lake has a typical short cabin rainfly. I bought both and will set them up this weekend and can share more then if they're both still on sale.

Trying to decide if I want the eight man to go with the four man I just bought. It's got to be huge when setup with that vestibule though
