The add-in card may cost $100+ and you have to put it in the very bottom pcie 4.0 x 4 slot.
You can also swap out the Wi-Fi 6e if you ever want to since it's just connected to a m.2.
Google ms-4489 or msi usb4 pd100 expansion card.
When the x870e motherboards come out, the price would be in the $300+ range I'm guessing and we would most likely lose i/o because of it too.
I just bought this motherboard because I think it's too good of a deal for what you get in a current gen mobo for the price that has 4 m.2 slots and a lot of usb ports with no real compromises like other motherboards where if you populate certain m.2 or pcie slot, the other slots shut off or slow down at this price point.
Down the road years later if I want usb4 I can just buy the add-on card and upgrade to WiFi 7 or higher which is a nice upgrade path for a motherboard.

USB 4 Version 2.0 Announced With 80 Gbps of Bandwidth | Tom's Hardware (tomshardware.com)
Again USB 4/TB4 is the only way to go - it solves so many issues with old connecting methods.

The usb 4 expansion card will probably be released sometime this year if not at the end of the year for usb 4.
You are going to pay a premium price for early adopter tax on an x870e motherboard with usb4 (think of prices when am5 was first released).
An x870e from rumors will just be an x670e with built in usb4 at a higher price.
