For the uninformed. I work in IT in healthcare. The test are not going to stop you from getting COVID, they will let you know you have COVID. What you choose to do with this information is up to you and, let's face it, your employer. For us it means working from home for at least the day (for a non-positive result) or working from home for at least the week (for a positive result). We care about our coworkers and have the ability to protect them from getting sick. Which in turn protects them from spreading it to their families and patients.
We are lucky enough to have an employeer that cares about spreading disease and are lucky enough to have the ability to work from home. One of my coworkers is currently working from home because he is sick and I appreciate him for it.
I've been on SD for ages and I never get why people feel the need to argue about stuff like this. If you don't want the test, think it's stupid, whatever, don't sign up for it then. If you want it, great, get it.

tl;dr - chill out with the fighting
If you have a certain Kaiser plan, they give you home test for free. Its 4 boxes of 2pk max a month per person.

if you can't get why people need to argue that's a big problem right here. these tests are not free, we are taxed on every single thing and it's for what? THIS? I thought USPS was constantly losing money and I thought their purpose was to deliver mail, not to be a front for pushing medical stuff around.

Either way, there is a lot to argue about here. These tests are simply not "free" and someone is footing the bill. That right there is plenty to argue about.

Yes you are partially footing the bill for these and for that I thank you. I ordered eight more 😂

Do these detect the current mutation?

They had to put limits on how many anyone could get because they keep running out of them....

In for a set. I had to buy a few of these about 2 months ago from CVS. It's like $11 per test.

I am sorry to say you may have too much faith in humanity. Think of a person's average intelligence and then remember that 50% is below that.

Yes they do. If they didn't it would make the news and they would be coming up with new test to detect new variants. The tests target genetic areas of the virus that are conserved meaning that they are relatively constant in all variants.

Gloves? Gloves don't stop coughs. Gloved hands that are coughed into spread the same germs as ungloved hands that are coughed into, as well.

Damn! Now I have to throw away my gloves I've been using since 1/20?!?! But they were my lucky pho latex!

Just be aware these tests are highly inaccurate. The last two occasions where I tested positive for covid at a doctors office or pharmacy swap testing. I took two at home tests prior for each case and these always read negative. Not to say these aren't good to have around to check but don't trust that these are very accurate. ( speaking with doctors seems a lot more false negatives than false positives)
The efficacy of the tests depend upon many factors and they will not likely be as good as a properly administered one, and the equipment they use is more sensitive. For a comparo when my daughter had it two month back we did two tests (me the pleb IT guy and my wife a doc). I did mine, negative the wife positive. Now it could be a coincidence in the test but I received a 10 minute lecture on how to properly swab, not contaminate, and how to place the swab in the reagent. She had mentioned I failed on all three phases.

So take that for what it is worth the administration of the test by a professional is likely to be better than a normie and from there would have a better efficacy from proper procedure.

So I won't get Covid after the expiration date? What are you saying?
