In general, if you can actually remove a clog, it's much more effective and safer than this option. In my experience, 95% of them are in the PVC under the counter. It's not rocket science in any newer construction, and that stuff gets NASTY inside, especially bathrooms. Physical cleaning is always the best.

Buy Thrift drain cleaner, eBay, Amazon et.al.. It's expensive, relatively speaking, at over 20 bucks for large container, but IT WORKS, and is great for routine maintenance once or twice a year

Never had any luck with drain cleaners- it always makes the situation worse- and when I finally resort to physically removing the offending clog- I'm also dealing with an extremely caustic and dangerous drain cleaning solution in the pipes. As Ash78 say's it's better to just manually remove the clog

But for clogs you can't reach, there are also enzyme-based dissolving agents which are much less harsh on your pipes (or skin) than bleach.
