Specs are decent for the price but HP Victus build quality is not great. It's a step below the HP Omen, which is a step below the Lenovo Legion Pro. For comparison, Costco was selling the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i with the exact same specs a couple of months ago for the same price.

Your post is very confusing. You use "this laptop" a few times without referring to what laptop you're talking about. One has pros of "4060, Ethernet, lots of usb ports and usb c" and in another breath you say the pros are just "weight and ethernet".

It's a good deal, but the 1080p would only work for a competitive gamer. Too low for productivity and media consumption.

I think Costco had a Lenovo Legion Pro with similar specs for the same price a month or two ago. I should've bought that one because the build quality of a Lenovo Legion Pro blows the HP Victus out of the water.

By the way, those saying the con is 1080p, what do you think a 4060 is for? I paid $1000 for a victus six months ago with a 4060, 1440p 240hz, 16gb ddr5 and amd 7840 cpu. It's been a great laptop. But guess what, the 1440p 240hz is overkill b/c that gpu isn't pushing it. can it do 1440p? most certainly, but its geared towards 1080p. I do think they could have put a 240hz in this, but you're still getting a high refresh monitor. Also, if you care that much, buy a separate display.

To add to the above:

Right, the LG Gram (which a relative owns and is a nice laptop) does not have a dedicated GPU - it has integrated Iris XE graphics. So the LG Gram is NOT comparable to the 4060 equipped Victus in that sense.

The 4060 is designed for 1080p gaming, according to Nvidia. You'd need a 4070 or 4080 to play games well (maxed settings) at 1440p.

Bought the 4070 version of this a month ago which is $150 more I think. Pretty good machine. Spent $200 in upgrading the memory to 32GB (DDR5 btw) and SSD to 4tb.

This has a dim, 250 nit, low sRGB and color gamut screen, which basically kills the deal. Sure, you could plug it into a better screen - but then you've lost the point of a laptop which is portability. 1080p might be what the GPU is best for, but you can always lower the resolution on a 1440p+ display if the system needs it, and with integer scaling it doesn't affect the image quality. For general use, once you get used to higher res displays you will appreciate the sharpness.

Other cons: chassis only has 1 m.2 slot. They got rid of the SD card slot as well. It feels cheap with its all-plastic build. Fairly heavy.

Pros: replaceable RAM/SSD, good speakers and nice feeling keyboard.

I owned the predecessor to this with a 300 nit, 1080p, 100% sRGB screen and it was a good performing laptop but felt cheap.

Is this a better deal than the Dell G15 a few days ago? I like that the HP has 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD and I won't have to upgrade them. Reliability wise, which one is better?

You're right it's better suited for 1080p but I still wouldn't want a 16:9 1080p screen in current year. A laptop is for more than just gaming.

All the people that complain about a 4060 in a $1500 laptop don't realize there's more to a laptop and even the gaming experience than just the graphics card.

I've read to get a "gaming" laptop for photo and video editing. Would this be fine with After Effects and Premiere Pro? My current laptop lags when I use these.

You answer depends on how you intend to do those tasks. I would probably look more for a model with at least 100% DCI-P3. Depending on how accurate you need those colors, maybe 100% adobe RGB. 1440p/1600p screen. 300+nits.

Business laptops we're getting at work are mid-line Dell Latitudes with 250nit screens. They're fine for indoor general use. Marketing got XPS 15s with 500nit screens, and the difference is very dramatic. The Dell P-series work monitors and OptiPlex AIO screens I've seen since 2016 are all 250nits, and nobody ever throws a fit about their brightness, except three people who needed to darken the screens with privacy filters due to migraine light sensitivty. My personal laptop is an aging 300nit 100% sRGB screen which I find has better colors and brightness than my work equipment.
