All drives are a gamble, 2 is 1, but at refurb prices you can get 2 for the price of one new one.

I'm brand agnostic, but Seagate as a brand has far greater rate of failure vs WD.

The one order dead on arrival. But it looks like a new one. Is it worth to try one more time?
Make sure you use the included cable... mine seemed DOA until I used the sata power cable included. Has something to do with a feature you need to bypass as it doesn't work with all motherboards.

refurbished might be a dead giveaway!? shake head

Are these 10 TB used ones? How many hours? The Newegg page doesn't say whether they are used.
BB is extremely bogus, their AFR calculation can exceed 100% - you figure out how that would work?

and their stats don't mean squat if it doesn't include the capacity and model you happen to be be using...

Hence why I gave the Seagate caveat. I prefer Toshiba or WD personally, but plenty of people are all-in on Exos drives around here.

I've ordered four of these drives. One was DOA, the other three were fine. Very fast support from GoHardDrive and a five year warranty.

I was thinking the same. But I did not tried that cable.

I read the instruction but confused by the idea of hard reset. The hard drive clicked at the beginning and was keep spinning all the time. I do not know if it is locked up or not.

I checked there too. Frown But does not work. I will see if to order another one before the deal is gone.

Anybody have some suggestion a tool to scan the disk except CHKDSK. I hav not buy new hardwares for more than 12 years. Almost lost the tracking of new ideas. I have some old disk tools on bootable CDs, but the current system we are playing with have very strange BIOS system.

Could I ask is there special setting to run those hard drive?
I connect the hard drive several differen ways to the desktop, but it can not be recognized by the system.

Also could I ask what tool do you used to do the testing?
There is a manual come with it explained the "power disable" feature you probably missed. Also there is additional sata power cable that You can use to make it work. Fundamentally you need to disable the 3.3v connection

Just update . I got 2 driver and one of them pass my HDDscan verify test without any bad sectors . Replacing the other one with goHardDrive right now. Their customer service is responsive.
So it is possible to get a good one at least .

You need to use the included power cable extension. Goharddrive included the necessary cable and a little note explaining this.

Without the cable the drive was not detected even in BIOS, with it it was seen by bios right away.

Then you will need to format it in windows disk management for windows to see it as a normal drive.

I plan to put them in desktop running Blue Iris for CCTV cams. It wont be the main HDD as I am using a WD Purple but its only 4TB. I want to use the Ultrastar as a backup, where I move the WD Purple content aftet the drive fills. Good idea to get the Ultrastar given my use case? I figure its cheaper than getting another WD Purple just to backup. About how much "mileage" does a drive like the WD Ultrastar have in hours and writes? If I run HD Sentinel on it will it show the drive is basically junk?
Purples are SMR drives IIRC which would make them unfit for use as a backup device. There's no telling how much the drive has been used, and its common practice for refurbs sold like this to have their smart data wiped. Ultrastars are typically really good and if their claims of 2.5MTBF are accurate these still have a lot of life left.

These are so loud I can hear them in the boxes at Newegg. Spens the $10 and get a 12GB or better find a 14tb. But be warned all the HGST's are almost twice as loud as Red NAS Plus's

Can get it on eBay from goHardDrive for 69.99 with the 5 year warranty.
There is a code for 15% off eBay price in an online site that will bring cost to $59.49. Name not allowed to mention here.

Search eBay for:
HGST Ultrastar HE10 HUH721010ALE600 10TB SATA 6Gb/s 7200RPM 3.5" Enterprise HDD

There's also the 12TB for 99.99 from goHardDrive with the 5 year warranty.
Search eBay for:
HGST Ultrastar DC HC520 12TB SATA 6Gb 256MB 3.5" Enterprise HDD- HUH721212ALE601

These hard drives are rated for 2.5 million hours or about 285 years!

These hard drives should work great with the Synology NAS 4-bay DiskStation DS423+ or the 2-bay DS224+
CORRECTION:
**** According to the Synology NAS compatibility posted later on this thread, these two Synology NASs will NOT work with these HGST Enterprise hard drives ****

These are essentially HGST, Inc. (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) hard disk drives and they have a great reputation as very long-lasting hard drives.
