If you are a REI member, consider voting against the upcoming board member candidates, particularly the ex-Fanatics CEO.

Can you provide some additional context as to why you feel so strongly about voting against these candidates?

Interesting, could've sworn research indicates diverse teams outperform homogenous ones.

you actually think corporations are jumping on DEI b/c they think it leads to increased productivity? Rofl2

I'll bite. Statement still stands and research backed. I don't recall specifically mentioning productivity. Productivity is but one measure of performance and sometimes, diverse teams actually produce less as they move through stages of group dynamics. And, you're right - some companies use DEI as a marketing tool for their CSR "work". Others genuinely believe in it.

So for the 30 bonus card... I have to spend 50 and buy a membership. Does that mean I need to spend 80 dollars, or can 30 of the 50 be the membership? It's kinda unclear on that. I've been wanting to join a while this would help me choose.
"Member Bonus Card offer applies to one transaction that includes (i) a new REI membership AND (ii) the pre-tax purchase of eligible merchandise in the amount of $50 or more, after the application of any discounts and the price of the membership."

I believe the $30 membership counts towards the $50 based on the above statement.

Does this discount apply to hokas
Not usually, despite frustratingly using hokas as the image for the shoes category when advertising sales.

No. From their web site, the terms clearly state you have to:
1) Thru March 14, 2024, make a $50 purchase at REI
2) And add a lifetime membership for a one-time $30 fee to your cart
3) Then a bonus card will be emailed for use on a future purchase

So, you must make a $50 purchase AND a $30 lifetime membership.

The part you're quoting above also states $50 after discounts and price of membership.

Basically, they end up giving you a free lifetime membership.

What are some of the best value items to buy with this discount, given that bikes, kayaks, and other expensive things are no-go?

I personally went for an Insta360 camera a couple years ago because those are rarely on sale and are a high value item.

This year I am eyeing some higher end Garmin devices

No. If you return the $50 dollar item before using the $30 bonus card they will deactivate the bonus card. If you use the bonus card and then return the $50 item, they take the $30 out of your return.

From the terms and conditions: "If eligible product is returned for a refund after the card has been redeemed, the value of the redeemed card will be deducted from the refund amount."

Why do people want to game the system? Eventually, we will lose all the perks of unlimited returns, longer return periods and so on. Costco is already cracking down on these practices. REI has stopped its life time return. For short-term gains, we are forcing businesses to be more customer-unfriendly.
