Dumb question- are monitors either nvidia Gsync OR AMD freesync compatible or are they both the same thing (vsync) but branded differently? I only have nividia cards

A monitor can have both, but they are separate things. IMO Gsynch works fine on most none gsynch listed monitors. You can go into the Nvidia control panel and manually enable it.

They are technically different but share much the same tech so for the most part they are interchangeable. The main difference is Nvidia's gsync is licensed and AMD's freesync licensing is cheaper or free so more monitors have the freesync badge. AMD has made freesync "unofficially" compatible (for the most part) with Nvidia GPUs while also making their AMD cards "unofficially" compatible (for the most part) with gsync stuff.

Just a word of warning for those buying more than one of these. I purchased 2 for my WFH setup and there's a pretty significant color variation between the two. One leans more towards green and the other one had an overwhelming blue hue. Tweaking allowed me to compensate for the difference but it's still not a complete match. Probably not an issue for most folks but could be problematic for those working with graphics and video editing,

Isn't this the more common standard for any brand and model? Because no two boards are ever infinitely equal.

Did you connect one with HDMI and one with DP? I've found you can get color differences from the same source when mixing cable types if your card doesn't have enough of the correct outputs to match them.

Both are using DP cables of the same brand/length. Not a cable issue as it happens with another machine too.
