After triclosan was banned (which was first used in colgate total's original formulation) by the FDA, the companies switched to other antibacterial compounds.
I believe Total and this are using zinc citrate.
Some Bacteria in the mouth eat food particles and sugars, then create acid to destroy enamel.
Soaps remove most bacteria temporarily. Zinc, triclosan, etc suppress them for a longer period of time.
.....
The alternative, which is even more expensive for a toothpaste, is amino acids.

So, at the deal level, this or colgate total are basically same. Go with the price and taste.
The very expensive Crest can be beneficial for those prone to cavities and who don't brush within an hour after each meal.
But taste is different, so you might not like it.
Also, none of these leaves the teeth as smooth as Aquafresh Microbubbling Extreme Clean (silver and orange box), with the expensive Crest leaving teeth the roughest and total the smoothest among the other choice. For those that love the just visited the dentist smooth.
You can switch during the day. E.g. Zinc/amino acid toothpaste before bed, Aquafresh at breakfast, back to zinc/amino at lunch.
....
Naturally, sodas, sweets, flavored coffees, and the usual ton of Mom didn't recommend foods for health will usually be the fastest at eroding teeth, so if you're not brushing within the hour or half hour after snacks and meals, really can't help you when the dentists get that evil grin knowing they'll blow out your insurance this year.
At the minimum, drink unsweetened green tea after sweets (naturally antibacterial), xylotol gum (a sugar that inhibits bacteria), even rinse well with plain water if you can't get to the bathroom to brush.
Like Clinica Pro by Lion Japan.

There's toothpastes with higher fluoride concentrations, mouthwashes, etc, too.
....
As for In Between teeth and gum lines, Waterpik!

A Classic or Nano does fine for $50 vs $1000+ cavity work.
Anyone who's cleaned concrete using a pressure washer gets it. Gets into the tiny dips and areas brushes can't and blasts out the food and bacteria fast.

That said, as long as the action of the amino acid is to suppress bacteria, then the tourists makers can use them.
In recent years, they've been changing formulations quite often, even yearly. Part of it likely from the fda banning triclosan, and the other from the need to up the others in "benefits" when the main reason is simply to wash out food and bacteria from the mouth.
You'll get silly claims like "keeps mouth fresher than others" etc simply to take up shelf space with a zillion variations of the same thing.
In reality:
A. $0.99 store basics.
Toothpaste, fluoride.
Brush and it works.
UltraBright, Crest and Colgate basics.
Interestingly, they've been pushing small tubes of higher end down there, like colgate optic white (yes, hydrogen peroxide works well in whitening).
B. Most of the toothpastes mid-range
Slight variations. Some have more scrubbing particles (tartar types). Some have polishing (Aquafresh extreme). Some use alcohol (helps breaks down deposits and grease better).
But in general, nothing Amazing to kill bacteria long term.
C. High end.
Optic white (peroxide to whiten).
Total and Crest - zinc, aminos. Longer bacteria kill, less acid.
That said, WHY did triclosan get banned?
Kills bacteria, but doesn't break down rapidly. So kills good bacteria in the waterways. And.... Can kill good bacteria in the tummy!
