The similar refurb Acer XC-1660g (8 gb of ram instead of 16GB) can be had sometimes from VIP Outlet or Acer on ebay for $150 or less. The availability comes and goes though.
In addition to the optical drive, the Acer also has come USB 3 Gen 2 (10gb/s) ports.

There is no warranty listed on the ebay product page, and even though the item is CLAIMED to be new, buried in the details it says "This computer is upgraded to 16GB RAM!" which means it really isn't new, as they opened the computer to install extra RAM.

Seal/box opened = NOT NEW

It's really that simple. The sooner everyone figures this out the better off we'll all be.

I was not able to find a reference that RAM was upgraded but in Item specifics and in seller's notes it says that it comes with 1 year warranty.

On the first line under item description, it says "This computer is upgraded to 16GB RAM!".

I do see where they say 1 year warranty, I would suggest anyone who buys this to immediately register with HP and make sure it is actually giving you the 1 year warranty.

I recently got a similar computer from goodwill for about $71 after tax and shipping. I really like the form factor, but not all the proprietary parts. Mine has the b460 chipset while this appears to have the h570. Neither can be upgraded to 11th Gen Intel. I would search eBay for a model with the 12100 CPU which is a significant upgrade for just a bit more.

Imo, you can say that about Dell and many of the major manufacturers as well. CS is largely outsourced and clueless. Not excusing HP, but they all raced to the bottom of the service pile. In fact, in my experience this is true of most tech firms whether it be router makers, computer makers, phones, tablets, etc. I get a laugh when I read someone trying to resolve issues with their router manufacturer's tech support...you have a better chance of winning the powerball imo than of their support helping beyond that which you can google online yourself.

My 2 cents.

This is, or used to be, a recommended build on the Serverbuilds website for running Plex. I've been running this model as a standalone Plex box for a couple years sitting on my basement and streaming to my devices and it's great. It transcodes pretty much everything - except 4k I guess.

Not sure if it can be had cheaper. I bought mine $100 used on eBay. 16 gb RAM a bit is overkill for Plex too. Mine has 12 GB and I don't think it ever goes above 4 GB usage, even while transcoding. I guess media playback is a CPU intensive task, not a memory intensive one.

I'd go even further and claim these are refurb units since the mobos are from 4 chipset generations ago. Nothing this old is "new"

This should be able to handle at least one 4K transcode, assuming you have the encoder set to use QuickSync. If it's using the CPU, it's going to struggle immensely.

However, the only reason to transcode at all is if your network can't sustain what you're trying to stream or you have an odd device that can't decode video files directly.

For example, a Raspberry Pi (4B or better) will host a Plex server and can handle multiple 4K direct streams at once.

I would test out direct stream and see if your network can handle it. If so, that change alone will bring your electricity bill down, since the processor won't be working as hard.

These systems usually get leased in bulk to institutions and then are sent back after some years, so as to not accumulate tech debt.

Refurbishment isn't a bad thing, provided they actually got refurbished.

In fact, in-warranty refurbishment is actually better than buying something new and then discovering there's an issue. Both products could potentially have an issue, but one got resolved before it got to you. When it comes to avoiding the logistics of having to send something back, that should only benefit you.

The Acer deal sounds better.

They all look like a good basic desktop. It's everything my son needs for school and I can add graphics or a better CPU down the line, if I want.

Can it fit expansion graphics?
