720p is still considered "high definition."
The most you can get out of a DVD is 480P (720x480).

Good filler for my garbage.

Ralph Kramden won't take it out until it's full - full.

You can buy them and then travel back in time and gift it to yourself in the 90s

This is a bit of an ignorant comment. I get your sentiment, but there is a ridiculous amount of content out there that would not make sense to put on Blu-ray, because it's just not possible to make it HD (outside of interpolating "upconversions" that will never look as good as a true HD transfer).
Basically, ANYTHING that was originally recorded to video tape instead of film, because the video tape itself has a very finite resolution that cannot be improved. Film, you can go back to the original media and do a new digital transfer with improved scanners, but that's just not possible to do with tape. That's why you can make an amazing HD transfer of movies from the 1930's, but you'll pretty much never see a Blu-ray release of most TV shows from the 1980's or 1990's.
And unlike the fact that a DVD player couldn't play a VHS tape, a 4K Blu-ray player is still capable of playing back DVD media. Video tape use instead of film actually started much earlier than the 1980's as well for some content, the oldest example I know of that I can rattle off the top of my head would be Monty Python's Flying Circus.
What we really need is AI based upconversion. It's inevitable. Already happening in the gaming front.

Appears to be sold out at the $12.96 price.

Guess DVDs are still desirable after all.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but most AI imagery still looks like bad Photoshop jobs, so that's still not going to make an objectively better end result than any existing upconversion methods used today.

Ah, yes, the best of the non-recordable analog formats.

Lots of computers lack a drive altogether but I've never seen an actual blu ray player in anyone's home. Just ps3, ps4 ps5
Psh, my computer has 3 optical drives, and that's just the internal ones. If I plugged in all my USB external drives at the same time, I could start reading from at least 8 different discs at the same time.
And yes, I still have multiple Blu-Ray players in my house too, so all you've proven is that you've never been to my house Smilie.

Buying DVD's at this point is stupid af imo, just pissing away your money on shitty quality.
If the original content was shot on analog video tape instead of film, there is no practical purpose to doing anything more than a DVD release, because you simply can't make it HD. Upscaling is not the same thing as a true HD transfer.

Yes but you convert your BRs for that using the hundreds of DVD+Rs you accumulated during the free-after-rebate days some 15+ yrs ago.
A lot of DVDs can be bought for a $1 now. Not everyone is rich out there and not everyone can afford Blu-ray/players/have time to convert.

A lot of PC or laptops doesn't even include Blu-ray drives, like they did with headphone jacks. I'm sure people who still use old laptops have a DVD-rom on it.

It's like there's people who still buy old console games because it's finally affordable to them/don't need the latest and greatest resolution/etc.

It's almost like arguing "wow it's 2024, people are still driving gas?" sure, blu-ray/electric is better, but it still works for some people... Now VHS is still a pain to rewind and skip... DVDs has the same convenience as Blu-ray except lower resolution. There's some movies that still to this day don't even get a proper Blu-ray release

If streaming wasn't an option I'd still watch dvds. Which I can play from older laptops, still have a working 720p tv with build in DVD player. Abd could still use the blue ray players in various gaming consoles. If they wifi even goes down for an extended time period, watching physical dvds would be the next entertainment option
