A few things.
First, the actual resin (PE) is on the order of $0.50/lb. I can't find the weight @ HD but the Q&A lead me to believe the 55 gal would be on the order of 15 lb. That's nearly $8 just in raw material.
Then you have to have the operation to make these. These are made in gigantic injection molding presses. Of course they consume a lot of electricity and overhead in handling. Then they need to get to you.
I don't know where these are made specifically, but when everyone is demanding $15/hr just to exist, if your labor increases then guess what, your prices increase too.
So it's a multitude of things, and to top it off, supply and demand.
These seem to be somewhat inferior to the Costco 27 gal ones despite being very similar in design, but Costco doesn't sell a 55 gal version. I wouldn't have grabbed these if they weren't on sale. These might be suitable for lightweight clothing or etc - I can't imagine filling them with anything appreciably heavy, I don't think the tote would survive and even if it did you wouldn't be able to lift it.

I don't know what the cycle time is on these but the mold has to be gigantic, I doubt it's 20 seconds per tub.
You're trying to argue details and losing sight of the fact that costs have all around increased dramatically. And yes, labor is one of them - and far more than literally the person running any given machine.

That is the same with every product in existence that is ever made. I still don't think those costs justify the original MSRP on this product is all
