Anyone familiar with these types of systems? Wondering if/how universal the filters might be when it comes time to find a replacement.

Along the same lines, would there be any issues using a sub-micron filter?

My issue with RO is it produces a lot of waste water. That is you can go thru 3 gals to get 1 clean gal.

Imho it's more for emergencies than a full time thing.

I had been using this for several years. It's good and nice. We run it full time and only notice a slight increase in water bills, but hey, still a lot less than bottle/5 gallons of water we used to exchange. For the replacement, I typically waiting for a deal similar to this and buy new because it came with 2x filters and should last a year ish. Last time that I bought it was around $130 ish. maybe inflation push this up

It's a sink unit, so really only for drinking or cooking and not a whole home unit, so you're likely to only go through a few gallons a day at most so the waste would be relatively minimal. You'll waste way more waiting for the water to get hot for your shower (assuming you don't have a hot water circulation unit.)

This is the system that I use as well, I love it so much! I have the meters to see how well it filters, and also the pH improvement. It's the only water that I typically drink, and definitely worth the cost. I am going to move soon and I am purchasing another unit for that transition.

I agree that in this case, it might not be too bad. But it is something to be aware in the sense that almost-clean water is a valued resource in the way clean water is. I was pro-RO until I found out the down side.

At a practical level, I agree. On a moral / ethical level I'd prefer to look for alternatives.

Our well water is not drinkable without this system. It is a must to have and water is also wasted along with plastic and such from bottled water.

Although we got the one with Alkaline added. It is only $20 more. Those filters cost more than that.

I recently got tankless system from same company. It is great. It is smaller, waste less water and easy to replace filters.

When you draw water from these tankless system the first few glasses of water are poor quality. The RO membrane separation process is dynamic. Needs to build up pressure and rinse down to good quality.

These new ones are of different type. They are powered and has small motor which forces water through membrane to maintain the flow. BTW, I dont feel much difference in taste (not sure about quality) .

Understood. Google "Tankless RO TDS creep"

Technically the same thing is going on with a tank system but it's diluted by the stored water so it goes unnoticed.
