Absolutely. I wouldn't a Smart TV without one. I bought the original Apple TV 4K back in 2017-2018 because my Sony 4K 65" TV became unresponsive and sluggish while I tried to navigate the OS. The internal gen 1 Chromecast stopped working as well. Once I bought the Apple TV 4K, I never looked back. The interface is seamless and easy to navigate. Plus there's zero ads while navigating the device, unless you're looking at the Apple services. I prefer the Apple TV to Google OS, Tizen (Samsung), and LG's WebOS.

Thanks for posting. I'm waiting for the 128GB model to hit $99 again.

Depends. If you're generally happy with your smartTV interface, then it's probably not worth it.

However, if you find whatever you're currently using annoying because of slow/laggy controls, excessive ads/promotional content on the homepage, etc. then it might be worth considering.

AppleTV 4k is a good quality streaming box, that has good performance, and shows little promotional content, aside from whatever is in the apps themselves.

The user interface is kind of like Roku (a grid of apps), but it's faster, and has some ecosystem benefits if you have iphone/ipad, since you can use your iOS devices as remotes.

If you also use homekit for any smarthome devices, the apple TV (128GB model with ethernet) also supports matter, but that's not the model in the OP.

I should mention, I stream everything on my Xbox.

The Apple TV is one of the best streaming devices out there. I don't know which formats the Xbox consoles support, but the Apple TV supports HDR, HDR10+ (exclusive to Apple TV 3rd Gen), and Dolby Vision.

For us, yes. LG stopped upgrading their OS on my TV shortly after we bought it. Apps are limited. The performance of the Apple TV compared to the native apps on the TV is dramatic. Also, the apps on the Apple TV seem to be updated more frequently, especially the more popular ones.

Oh boy you just put in writing what I have been feeling about my tv and the sluggish "smart" interface and awful it is for UX. Going to consider going the Apple TV route instead like you described. Thanks so much for sharing.

Yes from a security standpoint apple tv will be upgraded more often, TV vendors don't really care about security as much. I leave mine disabled from Internet 24/7, and occasionally turn on to check for updates

All things considered, you would want to subscribe to 4K streaming plans to make these fancy streaming boxes worthwhile.

I see a massive difference when it comes to Dolby Atmos!! I mean my Xbox S blows Apple TV 4K when it comes to Dolby Atmos. The reason I bought Apple 4k is to get the same experience that I get with my Xbox S but with added convenience. I don't know why Xbox Dolby Atmos is so good compared to Apple TV 4K
