Apple is a bit shady nowadays...
Non-pro chip in pro models.
Not directed towards the OP, but just want to point out the hypocrisy over here. Posted this exact deal a month ago and it remained this price for a good 2-3 weeks, and it was heavily downvoted with multiple people whining about this being the regular chip on a Pro model: https://slickdeals.net/f/17278783-apple-macbook-pro-14-liquid-retina-xdr-m3-chip-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-space-gray-1499-99?src=SiteSearchV2Algo
Now suddenly, everyone seems to like it. A bird to all those people.
No, you're stepping down from M1 Pro chip to base M3 chip

Seems like there are a lot less active Macbook deals right now, vs a month or so ago when there seemed to be tons. That could be a factor, but yeah.. people do love to thread crap on Apple deals lol

There's also people who still swear 8GB ram is plenty in 2024, and "MaCs uSe meMorY mOre effIciEntLy" to justify the madness.

It's not just that. The m3 creates a lot more heat. I read the MacBook m3 is throttled to literally 50% with the lid closed and hooked to an external monitor.

Put it on a cooling fan laptop stand and problem solved.

There's no 14 inch m1 non-pro chip.

The configurations on that site would beg to differ...

different model, but shows the regular M3 option

M3 != M1

M1 'non-pro' was never in the 14" MBP, same for M2.. they were in the 13" MBP.

Since they discontinued the 13", they moved the M3 (non-pro) to the 14" MBP lineup to have a middle option between MBA & the $2k 14" MBP with the M3 Pro.

I'm not justifying any memory size. Depends on the individuals needs. Just want to add, people mostly say that as new MacBooks starting m1 has unified memory.. meaning CPU, GPU,cache and RAM are all in one single chip and designed to work more efficiently compared to similar config non unified ones.

Would this be a good upgrade from a 14" MBP with a base M1?

Yes. It is. It would be for me but you really need to compare the features and decide for yourself.

I went to upgrade m3 air which most people will argue to just get the m3 pro 14 since price will get much closer with ram and ssd upgrades. More info below on why I went to m3 air which is "inferior" to m3 14 pro

Base M1 Pro is just 8 cpu cores. Not 10c so base m3 will be a decent performance boost for single core apps.

I went from a better M1 Pro 10c to 15" m3 air 8c and I am happy with my air even if the gpu has less cores but still enough for my LLM inference use. I don't play games so I don't know how the graphics performance diff is better the old gpu with more cores vs the faster and more capable 10 gpu cores.

Screen is also better with m3 14". Mine isn't better but I was fine doing the "downgrade" and I never use the extra ports on my m1

If you just want generic spec for spec comparison. You can find many suggesting diff things but you need to figure how YOU use it.

I know all of the spec differences but for me it was great to move to a 15" m3 air because I wanted a bigger screen without more weight and I wanted the much faster single core performance on the m3 chip over m1. Yes I know I had a 120hz better display but I was fine changing. I also wanted to replace a 2.5 year old machine and it was time!

There's also some obnoxious dude in every Mac thread who feels compelled to make this comment, despite the fact that the vast majority of people who need more than a base model MacBook Air already know their RAM and storage needs.

Give it a rest.

That's the MacBook Air which has no fan and the issue is when used in clamshell mode. I saw that and definitely concerning but depends on how and what you use.
No computer should get hot enough to throttle down 50% of its performance in any scenario.

It's horrible design and horrible managerial decisions. Apple is a multi trillion dollar company cheaping out on essentials for a while now.

8GB is not enough for anyone. That comment should be posted everywhere for everyone to see.

I've been using a base M1 MBA for two years. Lots of Safari tabs, and often (gasp) RAM swap. It's not a big deal. I use none of my Apple devices for anything resembling work. My iPad Pro is my fun device. I only own a Mac for things like paying bills or doing taxes, places I really want a keyboard.

Even knowing I run out of my 8GB of RAM, I'm not fussed about it. It's blatantly wrong to tell EVERYONE that 8GB isn't enough for them just because it might not be enough for you. Maybe you do video editing and run a business from your Mac. Mine is a glorified Chromebook, and base models are fine.

With ALL that said, I would not buy an MBP with 8GB. It's a little like buying a Ferrari with a Corolla's engine. Most people would be better served buying a 15" MBA and saving $500.

I disagree with people who say there shouldn't be 8GB options because the lightest of users won't feel it. However, for longevity and price, anything above $1000 not having 16GB of RAM feels like poor value. A MBA can be had for closer to $700, which is a bit easier to stomach given the ultrabook competition and the cost mostly being directed at its super light design. And if you get any other deal tacked on, it's just better than nearly everything else at that price-point.

You may not care about Swap but that does incur extra write-cycles to your SSD which is unnecessary wear, imo. Is it paranoia? Probably. But these things are expensive and I'd like them to last like how others have used the same Mac for 10+ years. Heck, my old Powerbook G4 still works (not good for much these days though).
