So at this price point it's a nice little device and will be fun to mess with. It has WiFi and Bluetooth audio.
Retroid makes a pocket device that is much more powerful and can play up to PS2. If you're looking for more of a modern -ish set of software supported that's a good spot to look - it's a nice price and solid value.
Retrogamecorps on YouTube is the absolute best dude to follow if you're interested in these things. He puts out recommendation lists but he's just a wonderful, thoughtful reviewer that found a weird niche

I just want to play SuperSmash Bros with a joystick.
One awesome feature the WIFI allows is that you can enable "retro achievements". It makes playing classic games a ton of fun and gives you little goals to shoot for. Damn near every game I've tried has achievements that you can unlock.
I have the original RG35XX as well, this is a massive upgrade over it. Everything up to and including PS1 works great. Dreamcast, PSP, and N64 are hit or miss but so far it has been mostly hits for me. Some Nintendo DS works but the way it displays the dual screens is not great at the moment.
The only downside I've seen is that it takes a lot more tinkering to get it set up. I'm running Batocera and it took me a couple of hours to get it all dialed in. For the original RG35XX it's much simpler just install GarlicOS and Tiny Best Set and you're done. This device is fairly new, I'm sure it'll get easier in the future.
For anyone new to these Anbernic devices, you're going to want to immediately purchase a reputable SD card to replace the junk one they send with it. You can use the card they send until it fails but you definitely want a backup because it WILL fail.
And if so, what else can it run that you wouldn't expect it to?
For anyone who isn't aware, Moonlight is a client that allows you to stream games from your computer (with Sunlight being the server software).
With this installed, you have access to any software installed on your computer, including your entire Steam library.
The resolution on this is much lower than a Steam Deck, so I wouldn't expect most PC games to scale well.
However, you could definitely emulate PS2 or Switch on your PC and stream it.
Pretty good for about the price of a Pizza.
Sure it's not perfect, but TadPole software and Multicore really help. Clean up the crap china/non-english roms for the kids and they are set.
edit: also good for sending to deployed troops. My brother has found his a great filler for those big boredom moments of hurry up and wait military deployment life.
Context matters.

Can you create your own save state with these things? Or does it still use the game's means of save points, like in Final Fantasy games?
Just curious if one were to play on the go and need to abruptly stop playing, is there a quick save feature.
Just saying, be careful. I do not know this one but I would wait until it is confirmed that it does what it says it does.
This particular one is legit from legit seller. I have one and it works great.
Here's another good YouTuber TechDweeb, his review and the new Koriki firmware that opens up the 35xxH to a few additional consoles:

If you are looking for something for younger kids get the Data Frog SF2000
They can play it out of the box, goes up to SNES and GBA and can be had for under $20 and sometimes as low as $12.
That way they play them, and they break them or loose interest, you're not out a ton of $$
I've been looking to upgrade to something that can play N64 like a Retroid Pocket 2S. The thing I dislike about these handhelds is that after a certain performance level these things start to get bigger and more expensive.

It will log what you play, and how you play and send the data back to the PRC government for investigation.

The Mali G31 in this is about on par with a Galaxy S8 in terms of performance.
Anything with a GPU better than that will start to give you access to Dreamcast, PS2, PSP, GameCube, and Wii emulation. And if you have an even newer flagship, you can emulate Switch.
I like the prospect of buying the controller once and being able to use it on new phones, but it also has the downside of tying up your phone from doing anything else.
They also have clips for Xbox/PlayStation controllers or purpose built phone controllers, but those are hell on your wrists.
