  • About the product:
    • Anbernic RG35XX H, a gaming handheld that was showcased in late 2023, was released less than two months after the RG35XX Plus, which served as its foundation. Contrary to its predecessors, the RG35XX H adopts a horizontal layout, while the previous RG35XX series only offered a vertical gaming handheld option. In essence, the RG35XX H combines a 3.5-inch IPS display with an Allwinner H700 chipset. Additionally, this gaming handheld is equipped with 1 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, dual microSD card slots, and a 3,300 mAh battery that has been tested to last approximately 8 hours when running PS1 game emulations. Furthermore, Anbernic has included Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and HDMI connectivity to facilitate multiplayer gaming, wireless controller support, and external monitor output. In a nutshell, the Anbernic RG35XX H is the horizontal version of the very popular RG35XX Plus, a handheld that sits high in the best retro handhelds list.

Depends on what you want out of a device like this. The RG35xx H is definitely going to be comfortable, solid build quality, solid screen. It will play everything through PlayStation 1 fine. A lot of folks get a device like this, spend a few hours tinkering with roms and getting it set up to be 'perfect' and then it goes in the junk drawer. There's a lot of ewaste here.

So at this price point it's a nice little device and will be fun to mess with. It has WiFi and Bluetooth audio.

Retroid makes a pocket device that is much more powerful and can play up to PS2. If you're looking for more of a modern -ish set of software supported that's a good spot to look - it's a nice price and solid value.

Retrogamecorps on YouTube is the absolute best dude to follow if you're interested in these things. He puts out recommendation lists but he's just a wonderful, thoughtful reviewer that found a weird niche

I see these devices pop up from time to time, never bought one…but always wanted one. Everyone always says "get the horizontal one", is this that one?

This is probably the best small horizontal handheld for games up to ps1. There are obviously bigger and more powerful ones but at his price and size, this is the one to get.

Anybody know if this will do N64 roms?
I just want to play SuperSmash Bros with a joystick.
I haven't tried n64 on it yet, it should run n64 games okay. there's a lot of YouTube videos that show its performance with various n64 games.

I have one that I paid $60 for and I'm loving it. In for another so I can play SNES games with the wife and kids over WIFI.

One awesome feature the WIFI allows is that you can enable "retro achievements". It makes playing classic games a ton of fun and gives you little goals to shoot for. Damn near every game I've tried has achievements that you can unlock.

I have the original RG35XX as well, this is a massive upgrade over it. Everything up to and including PS1 works great. Dreamcast, PSP, and N64 are hit or miss but so far it has been mostly hits for me. Some Nintendo DS works but the way it displays the dual screens is not great at the moment.

The only downside I've seen is that it takes a lot more tinkering to get it set up. I'm running Batocera and it took me a couple of hours to get it all dialed in. For the original RG35XX it's much simpler just install GarlicOS and Tiny Best Set and you're done. This device is fairly new, I'm sure it'll get easier in the future.

For anyone new to these Anbernic devices, you're going to want to immediately purchase a reputable SD card to replace the junk one they send with it. You can use the card they send until it fails but you definitely want a backup because it WILL fail.

It claims to support Moonlight, but does anyone know how well it works?

And if so, what else can it run that you wouldn't expect it to?

For anyone who isn't aware, Moonlight is a client that allows you to stream games from your computer (with Sunlight being the server software).

With this installed, you have access to any software installed on your computer, including your entire Steam library.

The resolution on this is much lower than a Steam Deck, so I wouldn't expect most PC games to scale well.
However, you could definitely emulate PS2 or Switch on your PC and stream it.

I disagree, I have 3 and find their simplicity refreshing and ease of use great for the kids without having to invest a lot of dollars.

Pretty good for about the price of a Pizza.

Sure it's not perfect, but TadPole software and Multicore really help. Clean up the crap china/non-english roms for the kids and they are set.

edit: also good for sending to deployed troops. My brother has found his a great filler for those big boredom moments of hurry up and wait military deployment life.
Well I'm glad you and yours enjoy it. The battery life is pretty good in it to be fair. The emulation is terrible with every console, the Genesis is the best out of them. I had low expectations going in, due to the cheap price, this device managed to slide under the bar even at its low cost. I couldn't imagine a much worse way to introduce retro games to younger gamers. If you like it, and it works for you great! 2 out of 10 would not recommend.

You should edit your comment to note which device you're talking about, because it's not the one in this deal.

Context matters.

I haven't used emulators since the SNES9X days in the early 2000s. Now I see this big resurgence in these emulators and devices.

Can you create your own save state with these things? Or does it still use the game's means of save points, like in Final Fantasy games?

Just curious if one were to play on the go and need to abruptly stop playing, is there a quick save feature.

I had bought a similar one from wish a while back. Similar look to it but didn't have 2 sd slots. Pretty much everything they said about it was a lie. First it said it supported sd cards up to 512gb. Largest card I could get to work was 64gb. It said it came with like 10000 of games and it only had about 100 knock off games. Said it supported mame, arcade, game boy, nes, snes, ps1, ps2, ps3 and more. I could not get a single game that was not already on the thing to work. It did not recognize mame games or any other rom/game file. I wasn't too happy that I wasted 50 something bucks on it. And the battery only lasted about 20 minutes of play but said it had a 6 to 8 hour battery (6 hours of play and 8 of standby).

Just saying, be careful. I do not know this one but I would wait until it is confirmed that it does what it says it does.
You got junk likely due to lack of research. Their marketing page fooled you.

This particular one is legit from legit seller. I have one and it works great.

Great price on a very capable and pocketable handheld definitely the one to get for you or older teens.

Here's another good YouTuber TechDweeb, his review and the new Koriki firmware that opens up the 35xxH to a few additional consoles:

If you are looking for something for younger kids get the Data Frog SF2000
They can play it out of the box, goes up to SNES and GBA and can be had for under $20 and sometimes as low as $12.
That way they play them, and they break them or loose interest, you're not out a ton of $$
I agree on the Sf2000. There's a pretty active discord group. There's some customization for it as well. I paid around $10 shipped for mine. I do mostly play SNES and GBA games which run surprisingly well once you do the update.

I've been looking to upgrade to something that can play N64 like a Retroid Pocket 2S. The thing I dislike about these handhelds is that after a certain performance level these things start to get bigger and more expensive.

Yeah save states work great. You would enjoy this dedicated device if you enjoyed emulation in the early 2000s

Yep, it definitely does have spyware pre-installed.
It will log what you play, and how you play and send the data back to the PRC government for investigation.

The alternative is buying a controller shell for your phone.

The Mali G31 in this is about on par with a Galaxy S8 in terms of performance.

Anything with a GPU better than that will start to give you access to Dreamcast, PS2, PSP, GameCube, and Wii emulation. And if you have an even newer flagship, you can emulate Switch.

I like the prospect of buying the controller once and being able to use it on new phones, but it also has the downside of tying up your phone from doing anything else.

They also have clips for Xbox/PlayStation controllers or purpose built phone controllers, but those are hell on your wrists.

I got the RG35XX when it was on sale a month or so ago. The left movement button makes my player go up every time and it's incredibly annoying. Been waiting on a return label but support is terrible.
