How is this a good deal. The battery alone costs more than $100

Only good deal if you already have the battery

The odd thing about these electric edgers is how heavy it is at the head. It throws weight balance way off. My gas powered feels more balanced. Use the largest battery to counterbalance. Don't expect the electric edger to way significantly less than gas.
Weight of the head? Balance? My friend, there is a wheel at the front for a reason.

Unless you're plan is to use this as a weapon for the zombie apocalypse you shouldn't be waiving this thing around, and a lighter load on the battery end is less weight to support.

I'm thoroughly annoyed it's not EGO+ as I'm in that battery platform. I went from maybe picking this up to not at all now that you mentioned tool-only.

But that's only if you have the OG 80v weed whacker that allows for attachments. The Gen 2 and above don't allow for that.
The latest-generation attachment-capable string trimmer is still available, I bought one recently. There are at least three versions that I'm aware of, this is the latest:

I stand corrected then. I was not aware that there was an attachment version of the weed whacker. Must be a specific GW item on their website vs the Costco ones.

The attachment capable gen2 was recently on Woot (tool only) for $99.

The 1st gen had a variable trigger, but no Hi-LO power switch. The trigger didn't work well (on mine) seemed either full on or too slow.

The gen 2 had a H-Lo switch and the battery loaded from the rear.

The gen 3 has the Hi-Lo switch in a different location and loads the battery from the top. Mine works very well, with the steel blade edger attachment it will dig a deep trench when edging, it has a lot of power.

In my yard, I have to frequently carry equipment from the shed to different parts of the yard. I even have to lift it to edge different lines in the same area. You can wheel your edger everywhere, i.e., never lift it, if you want.

You would be amazed how weight balance, not simply how much does one end weigh, can make carrying something easier.

I didn't go into the angle of the shaft to the wheel and how it affects usage. Or, how the height adjustment wheel doesn't lower enough, so you switch blades a little sooner than normal. How the geometry of design impacts usage will blow your mind. Also, I have the 40V version of this edger. Looks the same, but can't confirm dimensions. I'm coming from years of using a gas powered Shindaiwa commercial grade edger.

Didn't know they redesigned. Good to know.
The 80v kobalt system uses the same battery except they included some extra plastic to prevent the kobalt and greenworks tools from easily fitting together interchangeably. This can be solved by just removing a little bit of plastic.

There are YouTube videos and websites showing how to modify. I use both systems with the same batteries.

I believe it was the same situation with the 40v systems. It's been a long time since I looked into it but I think Ryobi was, at least originally, also using the same stuff.

* Edited to fix auto corrected product name.

My guy, if you couldn't tell by my zombie apocalypse comment, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

Of course people carry tools so balance has an impact, but this is slick deals. Most people aren't going out buying a $200+ 4ah battery to improve tool balance.

I didn't take you seriously.

Buyers are looking for value, experience being a part of it. (Who wants to spend $200 & be dissatisfied?) Using battery electric is different from gas. Not bad, but different. Pushing 8lbs on the end of a stick is different from rolling a stick with 5lbs on one end and 3lbs on the other. People who edge know.

You recommended a $200 battery for a $150 tool for the sake of user experience. To slick dealers. Know your audience. It's a fine tool at a decent price, but unless you hate money, you should throw whatever size 80v you have into it and it'll perform just fine.

This thing is 5' long with nearly all 10lbs on the front end and the pivot point is basically right behind all of that weight. The 3lbs of the standard battery is more than enough to counterbalance, you don't need the 2 extra pounds of the 4ah battery for "balance" because that is all weight right on the handle.

You're suggesting adding more weight to the end you're holding when all you're doing is asking for back pain. If this were a string trimmer -with the shoulder strap support in the middle- you would have a decent point that I agree with, but it's not. Their string trimmers are also bottom heavy and benefit from more weight on the battery end, but balance is a little more important when you're supporting all the weight.

I'm not comparing this to gas, I'm talking about this tool specifically, which I have, and have multiple other tools in the greenworks 80v ecosystem: this is a 10lb trimmer and their standard 2ah battery is 3lbs, which is already decently heavy. Recommending adding another 2lbs for the sake of "balance" is making a heavy tool needlessly heavier for questionable benefit, but please continue to gatekeep by being "someone who edges" like that isnt something most homeowners do.

Not that great for a tool only. I have the latest model GW string trimmer with a steel blade edger attachment. It works great, and easily converts back to a string trimmer, plus all the other attachments are available (I also have the hedge trimmer attachment). Woot had the string trimmer (tool only) for $99 recently. I've seen it for around $200 with a 2 Ah battery. I see the attachments on FB marketplace for anywhere from $20-$50.
Current price of the string trimmer with 2Ah battery at Costco is exactly that, $200.

Correct, but that model is not attachment-capable (the motor is at the trimmer head). I've owned two different models for about 4 years now. I find the attachment-capable unit is well worth having. I now have the current model (linked in an earlier post). The attachments work well, and obviate the need to buy, store and maintain separate tools. One powerhead for many different tools. It has worked well for me.

You look to be correct - doesn't say it on the Costco site that this is not attachment capable. I assume you know from experience.
