I have both.
1. C545 is smaller than 5500-2.
2. C545 has wifi and 5500-2 does not.(I use to schedule to turn on and off)
3. 5500-2 has a remote, C545 does not. (never use the remote)
4. C545 filters aren't that thick compare to 5500-2.
5. 5500-2 black filter is washable. C545 is not.
6. I bought the extra pet hair filter and stick it in 5500-2 for another layer. So it catches more dust.

Overall, i think 5500-2 is better.
I've got cats and a dog along with allergies. Had sever similar models as these, which use the same filter, some refurbished some new units. I run mine on the lowest setting for about 95% of the time. You can score good deals from individuals selling rom Amazon returns/pallets. Although 9:10 times there missing the hepa filters. All these models seem all about the same. I have (4) units running right now in various rooms in my house. The only major issue is a barring issue with the motor. Over time all of these units will develop a vibration and become loud! There is a hack/video online, of tearing down the unit and adding extra padding around where the vibration is rubbing at, and you can get a few more years out of them. As for maintenance: every 3 months I take the units out in the garage and blow them out with an air compressor and wipe them down along with changing out the charcoal filters. I change the hepa filters once a year. Are there better home air purifiers out there? Sure, but for the price, its hard to go wrong with these.
C545 at Costconow on sale. If you can pick it up at the warehouse you'll save the 4.95 shipping.

No extra filters included. I'll wait for a deal on the C535 with 2 years of filters. Although, I do like the gray look of this model.

Bought this last year in July for $117, and looks like I had a 40% off promo on it too. Unfortunately had to return it as something must have gotten damaged in shipping with the bearings and was super loud. My older Winix has been running at level 1 fan for the last 5 years every day with no issues at all.

This has better beefier charcoal filters, otherwise they are pretty similar.

Is it better to have one of the small units like this in each room or 1 high end $800-$1,000 unit in the house?

Mine was the same way. It happened over time too so I just ended up donating it.

I returned my (3) C545 units bought from costco and all 3 have this un-leveled/bearing noise on all speed levels. Costco version does provide 2 years of filters which is fantastic but the 5500-2 model has active charcoal pellets.

I returned C545, and picked up 3 Airmega 240 from amazon/woot a few days ago. The coway airmega has a higher quality fan, filter then the C545. It's more comparable to 5500-2 but air coverage/CADR is better on the co-way. Filters are expensive on the co-way but i intend to run the filters to the ground since i have 3 units around the house.

I would say just due to air flow you will achieve a better quality with multiple small units that are appropriate for the room size. There just won't be a way to efficiently circulate the entire house through a single air purifier unless it's your HVAC system
